While there are some beginner slopes, the pistes are best suited for intermediate skiers, and most visitors come here for the off piste terrain. Long descents run from the summit of the tiny Arp cable car, but the jewels in the crown are the huge descents off Punta Helbronner, served by the Monte Bianco Skyway Cable Car. Hire a guide and ensuring you have the correct equipment is the best way to enjoy these routes. Plan Checouit will remain open after dark, allowing skiers and snowboarders the chance to take dinner or an aperitif on the mountain before returning to down on the gondola – now open until midnight every evening.
Its inclusion in the Mont Blanc Unlimited ski pass and its unique location that means that it often has snow when the northern Alps doesn’t, makes this a popular destination for skiers from Chamonix when conditions aren’t ideal on the other side of Mont Blanc. But this works both ways, so if the snow isn’t great in Italy, a quick hop through the Mont Blanc Tunnel will have you in France and shredding the powder of Chamonix’s slopes.
Although there are some gentle slopes above Plan Checrouit, there is little here for beginners. Most of the 43km of slopes suit intermediates best and there is some great cruising on offer, both in the trees down to Zerotta and above them towards Youla. The main attraction however is the off piste. There is some excellent tree skiing and some seriously long descents from Arp down either side of the ski area – get a guide to explore these routes best.
Expert off piste skiers and snowboarders should hire a guide and head up to Punta Helbronnner. The views are spectacular from the recently rebuilt rotating cable car, but the ski descents are equally epic. You can either lap the lift via south facing, rocky slopes or head north towards Chamonix and the world- famous Vallée Blanche – ski down and come back via the Mont Blanc Tunnel.
The pretty resort sits in a deep valley so can struggle for sunshine in the depths of winter, but the cobbled streets and traditional main street make up for this. There is a good range of shops – including some excellent shops selling ski touring gear – as well as some cosy bars and restaurants that play host to a lively, but relaxed evening atmosphere in town.
For maximum convenience try and base yourself next to either of the access gondolas in Courmayeur, of which the Dolonne is slightly further out of town – but here you do get the bonus of being able to ski down at the end of the day.
Entrèves is an alternative a little further up the valley, stay here if you are looking to ski tour from the top of Helbronner each day, or if you’d rather escape to a very quiet, small village.
You have two options here – either fly to Geneva and drive through the Mont Blanc tunnel or head up the Aosta Valley from Turin. Both journeys take around an hour and a half to two hours.

Updated 30/12
Following a great weekend for the Italian Alps, the New Year dawns fine, dry and bright across the region thanks to high pressure. This moves away as the week continues, with cold and more unsettled weather eventually moving in.
The southwest will see around 15cm of snow fall in steady flurries over Friday, Saturday and Sunday; this will grow to a foot in the northwestern Italian Alps. A slower start in the Dolomites will see at least 20cm down on Sunday with more predicted outside this forecast period into the new week.
The freezing line will remain around 2,000m, dropping to 1,500m in places, before dropping off a cliff on Monday morning ensuring this snowfall – and the snow following into the new week – hits all elevations and remains there.
Check out the programme below for meeting times and locations throughout the Reps’ time in resort. Please note these may be subject to change depending on Rep and external factors, such as weather. Meet your Rep at the social hour below, or reach out to them using the contact number or via the Ski Club App.
Your Ski Club Reps are in resort for one reason only; to help you discover better skiing. They are your personal resort gurus, with years of experience skiing here and around the world, who will bring you and your fellow Members together to conquer the mountain! Stay up to date with everything in resort, find the best spots for an après beer, and ski to your heart’s content.
Our Reps will be in resort between 4 January and 28 March 2026, skiing six days a week – Reps’ day off/changeover day is Sunday in this resort. Log your upcoming trip to Courmayeur now via the “My Trips” function on the Ski Club App to let your Rep know when you’ll be in resort. View contact details, meeting times & points, and social hour details now.
I learned to ski on the plastic slopes of Hillend in Edinburgh before a school ski trip to France, at a time when skis were long and narrow and off-piste wasn’t really a thing. Many years later on a holiday to Banff we first came across the Ski Club, and by the end of the trip I was hooked on skiing the steeps and the trees. I’ve been fortunate to ski with the club in many European resorts and have the benefit of being close to some of the Scottish ski areas, but I somehow keep returning to Whistler. Nothing beats a great time in the mountains, and I look forward to sharing them with you.
First skied at 7 in leather lace-up boots, intermittently until 23, then annually, occasionally twice annually, ever since. Trois Vallees, Chamonix for a number of years, Porte du Soleil with the family, Verbier over the last decade. Love off piste, but very happy to share my passion for skiing with others from intermediate upwards.
Attended the Reps Course in December '22 to learn more technically, and to find new ski buddies. Away from the mountains, a keen sailor, once competitive, now less so, at least that's the theory..
I am a lover of all things mountain- Skiing in winter and cycling/hiking in summer. My ‘home’ area is in Morzine/Avoriaz as I have owned a place there for many years. I love to ski on and off piste and increasingly choose to ski tour when possible. I rode my 8th Etape Du Tour in Morzine last summer and have vowed never to do so again….!! Winter 23/24 will be my first season as a Ski Club Rep and I can’t wait to share the pistes and make new friends all over the Alps and beyond. I look forward to meeting as many members as possible this winter – please track me down in resort!
I developed my passion for Skiing at Medical School more than 40 years ago and apart from 2021, have never missed a season, often skiing several weeks a season. Having retired some years ago I have been fortunate to be able to share that passion, with the Ski Club since 2020. I have spent several weeks in Bad Hofgastein and Klosters repping on Freshtracks holidays and last season was resort rep in Courmayeur in February, which I am excited to be repeating this season.
Over the years I have skied extensively around Europe, the USA and Canada and even managed time in New Zealand and Australia in the 1990s. I have enjoyed skiing in Les Deux Alpes and La Thuile in recent years and am looking forward to helping members get the absolute best out of their Fresh Tracks holidays to these resorts this January!
Other than skiing, cycling and mountain biking are my main sporting interests, and for many years I enjoyed triathlons including at the age group World Championships in Australia in 2009. Knee problems ended my running, and triathlons in 2015 and they (the knees) are now replaced!
I started skiing in my early 20's and have managed to ski most years since then, mainly in Europe but occasionally in America or Canada. I enjoy skiing both on and off piste. I joined the Ski Club to take advantage of Freshtracks holidays and to utilise the Resort Repping services. I feel I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to become a Ski Club rep to give something back to the club and take the opportunity to ski, and share the odd drink, with like minded people in resort. Outside skiing I enjoy hill walking and mountain biking.
I started skiing when I was 7 years old - my parents put me on a bus and sent me off to ski school, and I’ve skied every year since.  Growing up in Canada meant skiing every weekend throughout the winter, and even weekday evenings with the school ski club.  Since moving to the UK 30 years ago, it’s been more about week-long ski trips with friends and family at various resorts around Europe, and of course an annual trip to ski with old friends in Canada.  There’s nothing like the feeling of being in the fresh air on snow!
