Forecast today: Partly cloudy
The mountain is divided into seven distinct zones, of which all (aside from the gentle slopes of the Lower Mountain) are home to excellent tree skiing and steeper terrain. The toughest challenges can be found in Currie Bowl and at Polar Peak – the latter is home to steep, above-treeline, double black diamond terrain.
When staying here, you have the chance to stay either in the valley town of Fernie around five miles to the north, where there is more choice of accommodation and dining options, or on the hill itself. Kimberley resort is around 90 minutes away and combining the two during one trip is a popular option. The lower mountain offers up some very good groomed terrain for beginners and early intermediates, almost all of which is rated green. Above this however, there are few greens and most of the runs are much steeper. For long groomers head to the runs off the Timber Bowl Express, which drop over 650 vertical metres.
It is however, the tree and powder skiing that attract most people to Fernie. For the best trees head to Siberia or Timber Bowl, whilst the bowl below Polar Peak and Cedar Bowl offer more open skiing – these are ideal on sunny powder days.
There are two options when staying at Fernie. For maximum convenience base yourself at the Mountain Resort, located right at the foot of the slopes. Whilst it may make your trip up the hill quicker, there is not a huge amount going on up on the hill, especially in the evening.
For a more lively atmosphere, a good choice of accommodation and the best bars and restaurants in the area, base yourself down in the small town of Fernie itself. It is only five miles away and a bus service links it to the resort, but having a car here helps – especially as it means you will be able to explore other resorts nearby.
Vail resorts has not confirmed closing dates for many of its resorts, waiting to see what conditions are like closer to the end of the season!

Cold albeit dry conditions for the Left Coast for this week after the good snowfall of last week, as sun means things turn fine, dry and bright across the Coastals. Temperatures increase into the weekend albeit staying cold, with some good snowfall on the radar for the end of the weekend and into the new week. This pattern repeats with the BC Interior and Rockies, although it will be bitterly, bitterly cold across both these regions.
Over the St Lawrence, sunshine begins to usher in the first signs of spring, with temperature dropping overnight but climbing again in the midday sun – things will remain well below freezing, however, at 1,000m
