Flachau

Lying an hour to the south of Salzburg, Flachau is a great, convenient resort for keen piste skiers looking for a short transfer from the airport.

After linking to in 2013/14 to neighbouring Wagrain, a network of 120km of linked pistes was formed to make the Flachau ski area one of the biggest in the Ski Amade Region.

Most of the local slopes are suited to intermediates and are marked as red on the piste map, but there are some bigger challenges towards Alpendorf and off the Topliner chairlift – the highest in the region. Speaking of lifts, the lift system is extremely impressive, with a fleet of fast 6- seater and 8-seater chairlifts littering the piste map.

There are four choices when looking to base yourself at the foot of the Flachau slopes. For the liveliest holiday, best choice of restaurants and most variety of accommodation, stay in Flachau itself at the foot of the Starjet chair. A little outside of the main village, there are options at th efoot of both the Achterjet and Spacejet lifts, whilst the village of Flachauwinkl (with its own linked ski area with neighbouring Zauchensee) is another option further up the valley

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
