The linked resorts of Laax and Flims (rebranded to just Laax) are home to one of Switzerland’s largest linked ski areas, great intermediate cruising, some underrated off piste and one of the world’s best freestyle setups.

On the Slopes
The best beginner areas are located at Foppa above Flims or on the sunny plateau at Crap Sogn Gion – just be aware that to get back to Laax you will need to download. From here, progression on to long, sweeping blues is excellent. We’d recommend exploring the network of blues above Sogn Martin as the most popular area at Alp Dado can get busy. Intermediates have the pick of most of the area, including the snowsure Vorab Glacier.
For those looking at freestyle, there are few better places; five terrain parks now dot the area following the opening of the Free60 Natural Terrain Park, an all-natural ungroomed slope with 18 natural obstacles.
Alongside this, the No Name Park is home to the biggest halfpipe in the world and some monster kickers – its no wonder the BRITS and the European Open are held in Laax and many athletes base themselves here during the winter. If the park isn’t your thing, then head to the unique Lavadinas chairlift (it rotates 45 degrees as you get on to give you a better view) for access to some good off piste or tackle one of the 36km of marked itineraries.
Flims-Laax have made a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, launching their Greenstyle scheme to reduce the resort’s carbon footprint. Part of this will see the world’s first “on-demand” ski lift, releasing chairs as and when needed to reduce the load on the cables and conserve energy.
What’s New for 2023/24?
LAAX has launched the FlemXpress, the world’s first “on-demand” ski lift, in time for the 2023/24 season. This lift serves the Fil de Cassons area of the resort. Unlike traditional gondolas, rather than having a set number of bubble constantly rotating round affixed to the cable, gondolas are only released onto the cable if there is demand for it and are powered from the gondola itself, rather than the entire cable mechanism moving. 15 years of development have brought this unique concept into being, and will see a 50% reduction in carbon emissions compared to the old lift that used to operate on this route.
In the Resort
Flims is the larger of the two and is a more traditional Swiss village. There is a good choice of accommodation and some excellent restaurants and bars, specialising mostly in Swiss food. It is noticeably quieter than Laax and makes for a better base for families or those looking for a chalet holiday.
In contrast Laax is smaller and much more lively, especially at the bottom of the Larnags lift station where the rocksresort dominates. This offers excellent self-catered accommodation, a number of lively bars that quickly fill up once the park closes and is the base for many of the world’s best athletes – keep your eyes peeled. The Riders Hotel is the place to be seen and is home to the best nightclub in town.

- Zürich airport: 1.5 hours (driving) or 2.5 hours (public transport)
- Friedrichshafen airport: 1.5 hours (driving)
- Basel airport: 2.5 hours (driving) or 3.5 hours (public transport)
- Calais: approximately 11 hours driving (565 miles)
Ski Pass Prices
The 2023/24 season at Flims-Laax is as follows:
- Weekend operation on the glacier (conditions permitting) – from 28 October 2023
- Daily lift operation – from 2 December 2023
- Main winter season – 16 December 2023 – 1 April 2024
- Low season – 2 April – 14 April 2024
Flims-Laax utilises dynamic lift ticket prices, influenced by how busy the resort is expected to be on a particular day.
Prices begin from:
- Adults (18-63) – 59CHF/day
- Seniors (64 and up) – 53CHF/day
- Teenagers (13-17) – 39.50CHF/day
- Children (6-12) – 20.50CHF/day
- Children 5 and under ski for free
Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort
Flims-Laax is the only resort the Club recognises as “environmentally sustainable” without third party certification.
Flims-Laax, as part of the Weisse Arena Group, has long been an industry leader in transitioning to an environmentally sustainable model. Via their Greenstyle initiative, functioning since 2010, Flims-Laax and WAG has:
- Taken significant, measurable steps to reduce energy use across its resort operations
- Implemented a long-term strategy to de-carbonise its office, residential and hotel developments, as well as vehicular operations
- The Greenstyle Foundation supports initiatives in resort and beyond via a significant array of funding schemes

Warm conditions dominate over the whole Swiss Alps over this week and into the weekend, as the freezing line remains stubbornly high until the end of this week. cloud and a few flurries of snowfall will move in at times, especially overnight, but this will barely be enough to register on the snow stake.
The freezing line drops gradually as the weekend approaches, dropping consistently to 1,000m on Saturday across the region. Saturday will also see some more unsettled weather move in including snowfall; around 10cm will fall across eastern areas, rising to 25cm over more westerly reaches. The freezing line will be lower in the east than west, meaning most of the best of this snowfall will be over upper slopes above 1,500m.
Sunday should dawn fine, dry and bright across the region, cold overnight temperatures climbing considerably in the midday sun as a spring-like freeze-thaw cycle begins. A mix of cloud and sun will then be the theme of the new week.
