One of Spain’s premier resorts and its third largest, Formigal is home to 137km of slopes and is situated in one of the prettiest parts of the Pyrenees.

The purpose-built resort base is located on a sunny, south facing slope, just over the valley from the main access lift to the ski area.

From the top of this 8-seater chair, four valleys open up a network of snowsure and at times surprisingly steep slopes, most of which are served by long, fast chairs.

Nearby Panticosa (included in the lift pass) adds a further 35km of slopes to the ski area, making this ski region more than worthy of a week-long visit, especially as prices are low and food in particular is excellent value.

Pros and cons

Large ski area with a great sense of travel from valley to valley
Lots of steep groomed terrain and good off piste after fresh snowfall
Great value food, drink, accommodation and lift pass

Main lifts a short drive or walk away from the access lifts
Slopes are treeless and lifts can suffer in high winds
Geared towards having a car and traffic can be an issue

On the Slopes

The resort is home to some excellent beginner areas, including just over the road at Sextas, but particularly at the Anayet base or at the top of Panticosa gondola a short drive away. Progression on to longer blues is then good, particularly at Anayet and at the Zona Izas. Much of the rest of the terrain is then accessible to confident intermediates, including some of the blacks which don’t quite warrant their steep status. We’d recommend the long, top-to-bottom Bosque run on the eastern fringes of the ski area.

Advanced skiers and riders will love the number of black runs on the piste map.

As mentioned not all of these warrant their status, but there are some really good challenges dropping down from Pico Tres Hommes in the Portalet zone at the far end of the resort and also on the runs that start from the Anayet chair before dropping down into the valley – just check the bus timetable as you’ll need to grab a lift back up to the lift system.

In the Resort

The purpose-built resort is very practical, with numerous good value hotels lower down and apartments further up. There’s a decent selection of restaurants, many of which serve Spanish specialities – this makes a nice change from Alpine food. Après ski can get lively at the Marchica at the foot of the lifts, but on the whole the atmosphere here is rather relaxed.
