Tucked away in the far western corner of Austria, Gargellen is a small resort that certainly packs a punch.
It is located just over the Swiss border from the Madrisa ski area of Davos and is the next door valley from Silvretta_Montafon and as a result finds itself in one of the snowiest corners of the Alps. The local slopes are compact, covering 28km, but are very snowsure and usually very quiet. The highlights are the long descents back down to the valley and the off piste terrain, which features heavily on the piste map in the form of itinerary routes. Keen ski tourers should hire a guide and tackle the Madrisa Rundtour, the famous ski cross-border ski tour to Davos and back.
The shady village at the foot of the valley is very quiet and sleepy, providing rustic charm and a handful of tasteful, family-run hotels. These act as a great base from which to explore the ski area and it is possible to ski right back into the heart of town at the end of the day. Getting here takes a little longer than most Austrian resorts – it is around a 2 hour transfer from both Zürich and Innsbruck airports.

Things finally turn the corner for Austrian resorts this week after predicted snowfall stays away over the New Year period. Continuing high pressure means 2026 dawns fine, dry and bright, however more unsettled conditions and snow move in over this weekend.
Starting on Friday, steady snowfall will blanket almost all areas in Austria, with 15cm down at St Anton each on Saturday and Sunday. A freezing line staying around 1,000m means this will hit most elevations. Further south and east, this will bear the brunt of snowfall for the region and up to 2ft could be expected down on Sunday and into the new week.
Things remain cold and snow as the new week begins, with plenty more snowfall on the way.
