Most of the visitors to La Toussuire and the rest of the Les Sybelles ski area tend to be French,
but more Brits are discovering this great value region of French Alps. Most of the terrain, linked with Le Corbier, is rated blue and red, but there’s a great learning zone on the edge of the village and a number of steeper challenges, especially after fresh snow when the area’s off piste comes into its own. The lift system has improved in recent years, with a number of new lifts, but more fast chairs would be welcome – there are still a lot of slow chairs and drags.
The resort is fairly high-rise in terms of architecture, with large apartment blocks dominating the skyline. This means there’s loads of very affordable self-catered accommodation, but it does mean that the resort is not the most picturesque. Off the slopes, there’s lots of snowshoe trails, some cross country routes and decent dining options.

On the Slopes
Over on the French side – note that the return must be made using slightly awkward draglifts – there is better terrain for less confident skiers. There is also the fantastic new area up on Mont Valaisan for more advanced skiers or snowboarders. Not only are the red runs a decent challenge, but a large area of lift-served off piste has been added to the trail map.

After a good couple of weeks for the French Alps, things settle down through this week as high pressure brings fine, dry and bright conditions to the region.
Temperatures will be warm, with the freezing line dropping only to 2,500m overnight and climbing as high as 3,500m in the midday sun. A rare flutter of cloud could move in over on Friday and Sunday, but otherwise spring is firmly here in the French Alps.
A couple of flurries of snow could fall early next week as the freezing line drops in to the new week, but it remains a bit too early to tell exactly how much, when, and where this might fall.
