Two gondolas from the edge of town or a pair of chairlifts from the satellite village further up at Chinaillon
access a varied, north facing range of slopes. Their aspect helps them hold their snow, but the low altitude and exposure to warm weather fronts on the edge of the Alps can cause snow reliability issues lower down. When the snow is good however, there’s good green runs for beginners, but the main attraction are the long steep reds and blacks off Mont Lachet and La Floria. The lift system is decent, with most of the main runs accessed via fast chairs, but a few slow old chairs and drags remain.
The village is traditional and similar to its near neighbour La Clusaz, with plenty of old wooden buildings and French alpine charm. An alternative base lies at Chinaillon, which has direct access to the slopes and is a little more snowsure, owing to its altitude of 1300m. Off the slopes, cross country and biathlon are big business here and there are some excellent trails in and around the resort as a result. Travel from Geneva takes around an hour on a good run, making this a great weekend destination.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort
The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Le Grand Bornand has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Spring conditions dominate across the French Alps, with high pressure bringing fine, dry and bright conditions throughout this week. Freezing overnight temperatures give way to warmth int he midday sun, as the freezing line yo-yos from 500m to 2,000m in a typical spring freeze-thaw.
This oscillation will slowly flatten over the course of this week as cloud moves into the region, settling on a pivot around 1,000m. This will bring with it a few flurries of snow into the weekend, with a useful 5cm falling across upper slopes.
Cloud begins to give way to this spring freeze-thaw sunshine again as the new week begins.
