Forecast today: Generally clear
There is more than enough variety in the local slopes to keep all but the keenest skiers and boarders happy for a week.
Almost all the pistes are rated blue or red, but there is a good beginner zone at the summit of the Chavannes gondola and there are some steeper blacks at Mont Chery, as well as some extensive freeride terrain at Chamossière above Morzine. The woods afford excellent protection in bad weather, but just note that the altitude is low, so snow quality can suffer early and late in the season.
The town itself is pretty and is dominated by traditional, chalet-style buildings. Basing yourself at the base of the Chavannes gondola and express chair affords you the best access to the slopes and the quickest access to the linked ski area. On-mountain restaurants are plentiful and usually of a high standard, whilst in town there are also some good bars and dining options.
Although there are a couple of short drags on the edge of town, the best beginner slopes are located at mid-mountain level, at the top of the Chavannes gondola. Longer greens are hard to come by, but there are a number of gentle blues that offer good progression for early intermediates. More confident skiers and boarders will be able to enjoy the vast majority of the Les Gets- Morzine ski area – our favourite runs are the long reds served by the recently built Ranfoilly Express.
Exploring the rest of the Portes du Soleil is well worth it for confident intermediates upwards – advanced and expert skiers should certainly buy the full lift pass and explore all 580km of slopes. Locally however, there are some decent steep runs at Mont Chery and also above Morzine in the Nyon and Chamossière sectors – where the best off piste can also be found.
Les Gets is attractive, with most buildings low-rise and constructed from wood in a traditional style – this is no high-rise concrete jungle like Avoriaz. The main street is lined with shops selling local produce and wine, whilst numerous restaurants and bars give it a lively and appealing feel. There are some good hotels, but also a great deal of chalet accommodation in the resort – lots of British tour operators run several chalets here.
The resort has a great selection of winter activities to keep kids and non- skiers occupied – including nursery and kindergarden options – making this a great family destination, or ideal for a mixed group containing non-skiers.
Winter walking and snowshoeing are popular, whilst cross country skiing is also available.

Updated 10/02
An incredibly snowy – stupidly snowy – absurdly snowy – – week begins for the French Alps, as a series of low pressure areas sweep in from Scandinavia, over the North Sea and British Isles, before hitting the continent and the Alps hard. Snow is already falling on Tuesday where around 20cm is expected down across higher ground. Overnight this picks up, and significant snowfall will fall on Wednesday with around 2ft expected down – the freezing line is hovering around 1,500m, meaning most of this will hit lower slopes but overnight snowfall will reach all slopes.
On Thursday things will begin to turn stupid: a metre (100cm) of snowfall is expected down over the French Alps, hitting most slopes as the freezing line drops to around 1,000m. Higher winds can be expected on this day as well.
The avalanche risk will increase dramatically over the course of the coming days, thanks to this new snowfall and sitting on a persistent weak layer. In places, this is already forecasted to hit Level 5 on the European scale, the highest available, indicating extraordinarily high risk of extreme slides. You should not be travelling away from protected pistes of infrastructure during this time, and expect large areas of the resort to be closed as avalanche mitigation takes place.
Snowfall continues into Friday, with the tailend of this storm bringing another foot across Friday and Saturday. The weather is suggesting it might clear on Sunday, with fine, dry and bright conditions forecasting, meaning Sunday should be the day to chase powder, although you should continue to check and plan your off piste travel carefully.
