Sitting at 1650m, the resort of Les Saisies is the highest in the Espace Diamant region.

Les Saisies offers up snowsure terrain on either side of its valley and a link across to the expansive linked slopes – to the resorts of Notre Dame de Bellecombe and Praz Sur Arly. Most of the local slopes are fairly gentle, making this a good resort for beginners or intermediates looking to improve their skills on snow. A few steeper on piste challenges are available, but more advanced skiers and riders will want to wait for fresh snowfall and head off piste.

The resort is very compact, with a neat centre and lots of ski-in-ski-out accommodation. Generally most lodging is good value and is family-friendly, plus there’s some decent chalets available for rent. Away from the slopes, Les Saisies is one of the best resorts in France for cross country skiing and the resort is home to 120km of perfectly groomed slopes, slopes which hosted the 1992 Albertville Olympic events.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.

As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Les Saisies has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing significant investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Les Saisies is one of the most recently accredited resorts, having been awarded its first snowflake in 2023
The resort is active year-round, providing economic resilience in the face of climate challenges
Alongside this, Les Saisies has developed a diverse and locally-focused economy

What must be the first Nordstau event of the year hits the Alps over the course of this week, bringing a return to winter conditions across much of the Northern French Alps. The freezing line will decline through the middle of this week, dropping close to sea level overnight Thursday into Friday.

At the same time, northerly unsettled conditions working their way in across Central and Eastern Europe brings snowfall to many areas north of the Briancon-Gap line. Over higher ground this could see as much as a foot-and-a-half through Wednesday evening and into Thursday; as the freezing line declines over this period, snow will work its way down to lower elevations, but the best conditions will remain above 2,000m.

A brief pause in the snowfall over Saturday still sees cloudy conditions dominating; a few more flurries move in over higher ground on Sunday, as the freezing line recovers to around 2,000m. The long term forecast then calls for sun and fine, dry and bright conditions to dominate as high pressure returns to the area.
