Boasting one of the longest ski seasons in the world

(in good snow years the Palmer snowfield can stay open all summer) and incredible scenery, Mount Hood is one of the world’s most unique ski areas.

There are in fact three different ski hills, all located in the forests on the southern flank of Mount Hood volcano. For beginners, Mount Hood Snowbowl is the best option, intermediates will love Timberline’s long greens and blues, whilst more advanced skiers and boarders will enjoy the steeper terrain and tree skiing of Mount Hood Meadows.

Accommodation-wise, staying at Government Camp or up at Timberline are your best options, but beware that options are fairly limited. Perhaps base yourself in Portland (around an hour away) and make the trip up each day, whilst soaking up the city’s culture, coffee shops and buzzing food scene.

The Left Coast’s bitterly disappointing season begins to sputter to its conclusion, as further mild conditions across most of the trans-Mississippi through this week and into the weekend. Many headline resorts have already announce their early closure before the end of the month, with barren slopes and shocking conditions the norm for the region.

A short snap of cold temperatures across the PNW and Tetons – as well as Montana and Idaho – may bring a short flurry to some areas.

Further east, things remain mostly cold for the region. Bitterly cold temperatures will be in play to start the weekend, but before that a short sharp burst of mild weather – timed to coincide with a burst of rainfall – does little to help the spring snowpack.
