Mount Hotham

Considered to be Australia's powder capital, Mount Hotham has a good snow record and offers free snowcat skiing on its best slopes.

Mount Hotham is Australia's highest alpine resort. It is the only resort in the Southern Hemisphere where the village is located on top of the mountain.

The 13 lifts serve varied slopes, including some consistently steep terrain. There’s a popular terrain park, snowshoeing, dog sledding and helicopter rides to ski Falls Creek. There are some excellent beginners areas, particularly at the top of the Big D Express chairlift. For intermediates, the pistes situated at Hells Corner offer good variety and some good chances for progression. The best area for advanced skiers is Golden Point where there are some steep black pistes and some excellent backcountry skiing.

Due to the location of the village, the accommodation is ski in, ski out. The resort is built along the top of a ridge, with the slopes below it and some of the country’s most exclusive hotels. Hotham Central has apartments, shops and restaurants. Dinner Plain 15-minutes’ drive away has lodging, bars and restaurants too. The resort is four hours from Melbourne and is located along the Great Alpine Road. If driving, remember to bring chains as you cannot enter the area without them. A park entry fee applies.
