The slopes here are very much the main attraction and these are served by a good network of fast lifts.

All of the terrain is wooded, providing excellent shelter in bad weather – which is very useful as the resort boasts an impressive 10m of snowfall a year on average. As with many Japanese resorts, off piste skiing is limited, but many runs are left un-groomed after fresh snowfall and tree-skiing is allowed at the top of the mountain – so head here as soon as possible after a fresh dump of powder.

The resort itself is also a major attraction thanks to its renowned hot springs, which were discovered in the 8th Century. With traditional ryokan inns and narrow cobbled streets, this resort really gives you an authentic Japanese skiing experience, a contrast from a much larger resorts such as Niseko.

Getting here is easy from the city of Nagano, which is only a couple of hours from Tokyo via bullet train.

A tale of two halves for Japan this week, as the season seems to have come to a juddering halt in the south but keeps plodding on in the north.

Honshu remains mild and damp, with lots of rain forecast for this week; temperatures remain mild with the freezing line ticking up above mid-mountain level. A short, sharp burst of snow and cold weather will keep things hopeful as the weekend dawns, albeit mild and sunny weather quickly returns.

On Hokkaido. cold weather is the theme of the week, with snowfall coming before the weekend – around 20cm on Friday night will make for mega riding conditions over the weekend.
