There's three ski areas in the valley around Oberstdorf, only one of which – the Nebelhorn – is accessible directly from the town.
For the most variety, highest slopes and the chance to ski across the border into Germany, the Fellhorn/Kanzelwand areas is your best bet. Its 34km of slopes offer up 1000m of vertical and an impressive lift system will ensure you make the most of your day on snow. The third option is the small area at Söllereck, plus over the border in Austria, Ifen offers up soem decent terrain.
The town itself is sizeable and much more than just a winter resort. As a result, there’s lots of accommodation on offer, a wide range of shops and a varied selection of restaurants and bars. An efficient ski bus system connects the centre to all the ski areas, but having a car does make it easier. Many visitors here don’t ever ski, choosing instead to spend their holiday on the network of cross country and winter walking trails in the valley.

Germany will benefit from the Nordstau event hitting the northern Alps this week, with good snowfall and dropping temperatures.
The freezing line will plummet from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to hit sea level on Friday morning. Driven by unsettled conditions moving in from the North, this will bring with it cloud and snowfall, with around 20cm expected down over Wednesday, Thursday and into Friday, benefiting principally upper slopes but falling across most elevations as the freezing line drops.
A burst of sunshine signals a brief return to spring freeze-thaw cycles, before the last tails of cloud bring with it a last flurry of snowfall to close out the weekend.
