Pila is a modern, purpose-built, car-free resort in the Aosta Valley and is home both to some of the most snowsure slopes in Europe and some of the most breathtaking views.

The resort is located a gondola ride above the town of Aosta and makes for a perfect base for snowsure piste skiing.
Most of the runs are marked red and are usually in great condition, thanks to decent natural snowfall, excellent grooming and a comprehensive snowmaking system. Its location just above Aosta means that Pila is much quieter during the week, both on the slopes and afterwards in the bars and restaurants.

On the Slopes
At the top of the Aosta gondola there is a neat beginner zone, as is the case in Pila itself. From here progression on to longer blues is good during the week and the middle of the day, but when the main Grimod blue is busy it is a more formidable challenge for less confident skiers and boarders. For intermediates, Pila is home to some of Italy’s best groomed runs, most of which are tree-lined which makes this a fantastic place to be in bad weather.
For more advanced skiers and boarders there are some good blacks above the treeline at the top of the resort and the trees can become one big playground after fresh snowfall. There are also some decent touring options nearby.
In the Resort
Pila has great, purpose-built convenience and as a result is very popular with families and school groups. There is lots of good value accommodation and there are numerous restaurants both in resort and on the slopes, specialising in local Italian cuisine. An alternative is the charming town of Aosta down in the valley – here you will find more variety on the bar, restaurant and shop front.
Getting to Pila
Turin is the closest airport and on a good run, the drive should take less than an hour and a half. Both of Milan’s airport’s make for good alternatives, but the drive will take around two hours.

Italy will barely benefit from the Nordstau conditions dominating through the middle of this week across the rest of the Alps, sitting as it does on the wrong side (for perhaps the first time this season) of the Main Alpine Ridge. It will not be without cold and snow, however, as the same cold conditions do make it over the Alps; in msot palces the freezing line drops from above 2,000m early this week to seas level by close of play on Thursday.
A few flurries will make it through; the best of this will be on higher ground closer to the ridge, with around 20cm expected down at Cervinia over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. This will be reduced to a few flurries in the Via Lattea or over the Dolomites.
A brief burst of sunshine follows for many areas, before the last few tails of cloud bring with them some more snow into the new week; it remains too early to tell exactly when and where this will fall, and how much, but the southwest seems to be getting the best of it.
