The north-facing resort is home to fantastically varied terrain and with tree-lined slopes, making Purgatory a great place to be in stormy weather.
Although the San Juan Mountains catch less snow than further north, the snow is usually very reliable thanks to the altitude and improved snowmaking coverage. The expert terrain is a big attraction, particularly the steeps back in to town and the runs off the Legends Express lift.
The resort base has seen lots of improvements in recent years and now boasts a good selection of condo and hotel accommodation, much of which is located right at the foot of the slopes. Its location makes it quite hard to get to from the UK, requiring a long drive from Denver or an internal flight, but this means you should make the most of your trip by tying in a visit to the nearby resorts of Telluride and Silverton.

The Left Coast’s historically bad start to the season begins to slowly turn a corner this week, with temperatures falling in all locations west of the Mississippi. It will remain mostly dry, however, with sun and a few belts of cloud throughout. A few flurries of snowfall will come down in the PNE and Frontier Ranges.
Further north, the Tetons benefits from excellent conditions north of the border to see steady snowfall from Wednesday night thruoghout the Christmas period, with around a foot down at all elevations as things turn cooler and cooler across the weekend.
On the Ice Coast, great conditions continue with snowfall expected on Christmas Day as temperatures plummet to 1F (-16C). Things turn drier and sunnier – and milder, too – into the weekend meaning skiing conditions will be ace!
