San Martino is a resort that previously favoured intermediates, but it has a growing reputation as an under-the-radar freeride destination.
The local slopes are split into three – each base lift is a short bus ride away from the town itself. In resort, there is a good selection of bars, restaurants and local shops, although it is generally quiet. The scenery more than makes up for this and its impossible not to be taken by the breathtaking surroundings.
Ski Club Freshtracks are heading out to the resort to make the most of the underrated freeride terrain in the company of local mountain guides.

On the Slopes
There are three local ski areas and a small beginner area which sits of the edge of town. The main zone, which peaks at 2385m at Cima Tognola, has a good selection of blues and reds, most of which are at a snowsure altitude. Further up the road from the resort lies Passo Rolle, a collection of groomed runs linked by five lifts. In addition, the Col Verde gondola serves a single slope – which is also open for night skiing.
Although parts of the resort are not hugely attractive and there are some large, modern buildings, the scenery more than makes up for this. The choice of accommodation is good and most hotels and guesthouses are very good value. The main issue, however, is the need to catch a bus to go skiing each day, but the service is good and efficient.
There is a brand new chairlift for this season called Cigolera, a six-seater located on the Alpe Tognola. From bottom to top in just three and a half minutes, this speedy new lift is the first step of modernisation of the lift-connection between Ces and Tognola. The second new chairlift, Cima Tognola, is planned for 2020.
The resort is relatively quiet, but there are some great restaurants and prices are generally very affordable – certainly in comparison to the big resorts of France and Switzerland.
Getting to San Martino di Casrozza
The resort is a quick and easy two hour drive from Venice airport, with the drive from the alternative at Verona taking half an hour longer.

The weekend opens warm across Italy, with the freezing line hovering around 3,500m. This will fall over the course of the weekend and into the new week, and as a layer of cloud cover moves in this brings with it precipitation.
This will fall as snow in parts especially across the northern Alps. Up to 20cm could fall in the Dolomites and elsewhere, primarily across higher ground as the freezing line remains above 2,000m when the snow arrives. A brief flash of sun through the middle of new week before another burst of unsettled weather moves in over the region later in the week.
