Not everyone comes here for the skiing, but those that don’t hit the slopes are really missing out.

The three ski areas in the St Moritz valley, nestled in the southeast corner of Switzerland, offer up over 300km of groomed slopes served by 42 lifts – several of which have seen upgrades in recent years. There is something for everyone, including good learning areas, some of the region’s best advanced terrain and snowsure skiing topping out at over 3300m.

Despite its reputation, St Moritz is far from being the prettiest resort in Switzerland – indeed some of the big apartment blocks are a bit of an eyesore.

But the quality of the accommodation on offer and the scenery more than make up for this.

On the Slopes

Corviglia is the local hill directly to the west of St Moritz. Its 155km of slopes are accessed from three points, with the most efficient route up being the train from St Moritz Dorf into the heart of the action at Corviglia. From here, an extensive network of long, wide and snowsure blues and reds make this a vast intermediate paradise. Further up there are some testing blacks and if you choose to return via the challenging 1928 and 1948 Olympic Downhill course (piste 12), your legs will certainly know about it! Corvatsch is the other major ski area and is home to 120km of slopes. These are mostly rated red and blue, offering some fantastic high altitude cruising.

Topping out at 3303m and with skiing on the Corvatsch glacier, this is a very snowsure area, making it a good early or late season destination.The third area at Diavolezza-Lagalb is essentially served by two long gondolas.

These however open up steep, long and mostly north-facing routes that are renowned for holding on to excellent snow conditions. The descent from the summit down the Morteratsch Glacier is the longest glacier run in Switzerland, dropping 1100m over the course of 10km – hire a guide for this and enjoy one of the country’s best runs.

the first Nordstau of the season (in late March, would you believe it) is set to bring excellent conditions across particularly eastern reaches of the country through the middle of this week. Unsettled conditions moving in from the north plummet temperatures, with the freezing line taking a long walk off a short pier through this period; dropping from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to sea level overnight into Friday.

With this unsettled weather will come excellent snowfall; the west will see useful top ups of around 20cm falling on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday, whereas the east will see bumper conditions with up to 2ft expected down at the same time. This will peak on Thursday, when c.50cm is expected down over higher ground.

Expect the avalanche forecast to climb over this period, as this new snow may well be sitting on a spring freeze-thaw crust and/or a very wet snowpack thanks to spring melt.

Things will return to a more spring-like norm as the weekend arrives, with spring freeze-thaw cycles in play and plenty of sun; a few lingering clouds will bring snowfall on Sunday and into the new week, but it remains a bit too far out to say exactly how much will fall, when, and where.
