The Stubai Glacier is lies around 20 minutes up the valley from the village of Neustiftand is home to one of the biggest and best glacial ski areas in the Alps.

Accessed via the impressive Eisgrat 3S gondola, the 42km of blue and red slopes are an early, late and also mid-season paradise for people looking to develop their skills. In the winter months, there’s also the chance to clock up some serious vertical by looping the 10km run from summit to base, which drops over 1500m. The lift system is very good and the world-famous Stubai Zoo Park is one of the best in the world.

Base yourself down in Neustift, a quiet village nestled in the deep Stubai Valley, with traditional old buildings and small, family run hotels dominating the accommodation on offer. There’s lots of winter walking trails, cross country routes and off slope activities, including the aforementioned toboggan runs at Elfer. Alternatively, the lift base at Mutterbergalm has a hotel, but is essentially a large car park for day trip visitors. Access from Innsbruck could not be easier – head directly south and you’ll be in Neustift within half an hour or Mutterbergalm in just less than an hour.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
