Sun Peaks is Canada’s second largest ski resort and it offers family-friendly terrain on three different mountains – all of which are connected by a good lift system.

The resort has developed rapidly from its humble beginnings as a small locals ski area on Mt Tod for the residents of nearby Kamloops.

New additions on Sundance Peak and Mt Morrisey have hugely expanded the skiable area, which now covers over 4000 acres and is home to some excellent groomed terrain. There is also some good off piste and tree skiing to be found, especially off the Crystal Chair on Mt Tod.

The small purpose built resort base is attractive and focuses around a central plaza at the base of the lifts. Condo blocks spread along the valley, either side of the summer golf course fairways. It is generally quiet, but there are a number of bars and restaurants to choose from.

Pros and cons

Great beginner facilities and progression on to longer greens
Good tree skiing and steeper terrain on the upper mountain
Resort is very quiet during the week

Resort is generally quiet at night and there’s not a great deal of dining options

Hardcore skiers and boarders will find the terrain a little mellow
Burfield quad is very long and slow

On the Slopes

This is arguably the most beginner and intermediate friendly resort in Canada.

At the base there is an excellent learning area and the gentle slopes served by the Sundance Express and the new Orient Chair offer some great progression.

Intermediates will enjoy the longer blues on Mt Morrisey, whilst steeper groomed terrain can be found under Burfield and Elevation chairlifts.

Sun Peaks is also home to some excellent gladed terrain and whilst it may not snow as much here as at some other Canadian resorts, the snow quality is usually very good – this is a great place to come to hone your powder technique. Steeper challenges can then be found either side of Juniper Ridge or via the short hike up to Gil’s, accessed from the top of the Crystal Chair.

In the Resort

Much of the accommodation focuses around the village core, where condos and some well-appointed hotels make for a very convenient base from which to explore the slopes. Dining and bar options are quite limited, but there are some nice options – with food ranging from pizza to pub classics and Mexican to BBQ.
Off the pistes there is a good network of groomed cross country trails and the snow covered golf course offers ample walking opportunities.
