Although Wengen is famous for the fearsome Lauberhorn Downhill course โ the longest and one of the toughest on the World Cup circuit โ its slopes are best suited to intermediates.
The village was a farming community long before skiing arrived; it is still tiny, but dominated by sizeable hotels, mostly of Victorian origin. So it is not exactly chocolate-box pretty, but it is charming and relaxed, and almost traffic-free. The short main street is the hub. Lined with chalet-style shops and hotels, it also has the ice rink and village nursery slopes right next to it.
Wengen is an attractive and reassuring village for families. The nursery slope is in the centre and the Playhouse kindergarten is in the tourist office nearby. Thereโs loads to do off the slopes, in including tobogganing, curling, ice skating, swimming and winter walking.
If you’re used to raving in Kitzbรผhel or Val Thorens, Wengen is quiet on the aprรจs scene, especially for young people. But a number of bars are still popular at the end of the day, including the Pickel Bar, the ‘cosy’ bar of the Silberhorn Hotel, the traditional Tanne and the ‘lively’ Rocks Bar, with plasma screens showing Sky Sports.
On the mountain, the outdoor Lรคger Bar, next to the Mรคnnlichen chair, is good for sitting in a deckchair in the sun. Tipirama (a wigwam at Kleine Scheidegg) is a fun place immediately after skiing ‘if not too cold’, sometimes with DJs and live bands. The Wรคsch bar at the Bumps section of the home run is a popular final-run stop-off.
Wengen’s enviable location on the northern side of the Swiss Alps makes it a dream to get to. The best way is to use Switzerland’s quick, clean and efficient railway network to deliver you directly from the airport to the heart of the resort. Journey times from Zurich Airport take around three hours, or from Geneva Airport four. If you are on a transfer or driving yourself, note that Wengen is mostly car free; vehicles stop in the valley at Lauterbrunnen, from where you hop on the train for the short but sharp climb up the side of the valley to Wengen.
Each area in the Jungfrau region, including the separate Grindelwald areas, employ separate opening and closing dates:
Individual area tickets are no longer available – instead, one lift pass now covers all Jungfrau resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mรผrren

We joined forces with the DHO group and headed over to Murren and the hope of better visibility than yesterday and were rewarded with fantastic visibility all morning. Both coffee and lunch were at the Piz Gloria resolving restaurant, punctuated with numerous runs down from Piz Gloria handle also blacks 9 and 12, which was the favourite run of the day. A few of us planned to ski all the way down, however the cloud came back in and we eventually decided that downloading from Birg was a better option.
Mainly Sunny and Clare in the morning but then dense cloud coming and going early afternoon and setting in by mid to late afternoon.
Final day of the season for Ski club rep Service in the Jungfrau region this season.

Updated 02/05
Warm weather opens the weekend across Switzerland, with the freezing line sitting high at close to or above 4,000m throughout. Things change as the weekend continues, with temperatures cooling as the freezing line comes down to as low as 1,500m.
Cloud cover dominates, and with it precipitation; this will fall as rain initially, but will turn to snow as temperatures fall. Around 12cm will fall in steady flurries throughout the weekend and into the new week, falling almost entirely on higher ground as the freezing line remains above 2,000m during this period.
High pressure brings fine, dry and bright conditions especially across the west of the region.
Thus concludes our snow overviews for this season. Thank you to everyone who has read them this season, and we look forward to seeing you again next year!

Alistair passed the 2006 Ski Club course and is looking foward to cramming in as much skiing as his employers will allow over the next few years. Alistair has skied with the club all over Europe inc St Anton, Zermatt, Verbier, Saas Fee & Meribel. He originally learned to ski on Cairngorm at the age of 13 and has skied as much as money, time and luck has permitted him over the last 33 years. Alistair completed his first repping slot over Christmas and New Year in Avoriaz for the 07/08 season which he thoroughly enjoyed and has kept going every year since!! Latest ski developments for Alistair have involved ski touring trips to Norway & Iceland.
I first skied at Glenshee on a fine Scottish winter's day in 1982 and was immediately hooked. Luckily for me, during the early eighties I lived in Rome and spent many happy weekends skiing with friends in the easily accessible resorts of the Abruzzi mountains. I love Italian style, culture and language and travel there as often as I can. I have also been fortunate to live overseas in India and Egypt. For most of my career I worked as a government press officer, first at the Scottish Office and then at Energy and Trade and Industry. I am relatively new to the Ski Club of Great Britain having joined through Mountain Tracks, my favourite ski touring holiday company. I am very much looking forward to skiing with many of you over the coming seasons.
We're still finalising our Reps Programme in this resort for 2025/26 - we hope to confirm our complete programme shortly.
I enjoy every aspect and style of downhill skiing - from cruisey blues through thigh-burning reds and jaw-dropping blacks to heart-pumping moguls and waist-burying powder (when available). But, more than anything else, skiing is for me a social sport so there is nothing I like more than making new friends and enjoying convivial company while finding new places to ski and new routes to travel between picturesque chocolate stops and wonderful mountain restaurants. This year I am looking forward to skiing some new resorts, meeting more friends and helping Ski Club members experience my favourite activities. When I am not dreaming about, or planning, my next ski trip I live in the quiet Hampshire downlands, keeping fit for next season swimming, cycling, walking and playing the occasional game of tennis.
I love the outdoors, and the combination of snow and mountains creates a special attraction. For many years I have introduced friends and family to skiing, helping them to develop and share in a great sport and environment. I saw being a Rep as a chance to meet new people, make friends, and share this passion. My other passion is rugby, which I played for over 30 years, and have also coached and refereed. I also enjoy scuba diving, which I have pursued in many countries, and one of the most interesting was an ice-dive at Tignes-le-lac.
We're still finalising our Reps Programme in this resort for 2025/26 - we hope to confirm our complete programme shortly.
