Since 2015/16, Zürs has been directly connected via the Flexenbahn gondola to St Anton

making this the ideal base to explore the 306km of linked pistes in what is one of the snowiest corners of the Alps. It was already connected to neighbouring Lech in the other direction – Zürs really is located in the perfect place. Whether it’s gentle groomers or steep off piste routes you’re looking for, there is so much variety here that you’ll be spoiled for choice. The Zürs village itself is very small, compact and almost entirely focussed on a small number of family-run and very well appointed hotels. All are of a very high standard and boast excellent facilities for post-skiing activities – just don’t come here expecting a party, you can stay over in St Anton after skiing for that and then catch the bus back later on.

Pros and cons

Right at the heart of Austria’s largest ski area
Incredible snow record and home to some fantastic off piste routes
Hotels are of very high quality and are not as expensive as you may first think

The village is small and there isn’t much away from the hotels
Access issues when it is snowy – the road closes frequently
No real tree-lined runs, so can be bleak in bad weather

On the Slopes

On the edge of the village, the recently built Ubungshangbahn and a couple of draglifts serve a sunny and gentle beginner area. From here, the longer blues under the fast Hexenboden chair are ideal for progression. Intermediates will then love the vast network of linked pistes that extend right the way to Warth-Schröcken in one direction and St Anton in the other. For quiet, long descents head to Stuben and the Albona gondola.

For advanced and expert skiers and boarders, there are few better ski areas. Not only is the snow extremely plentiful in this part of the Austrian Alps, but the piste map is littered with 200km of ski routes – unprepared but marked with poles. The long routes to Zug, the runs of the back of Rufikopf and of course the world-famous trails off Valluga at St Anton are a must if you’re a competent off piste skier or snowboarder.

In the Resort

Zürs is a very small resort, centred around a collection of family-run hotels, a few sports shops and a handful of restaurants. There is little to do off the snow, but most hotels have excellent spa facilities and high quality on-site restaurants.
The resort is quiet in the evenings, so if you’re looking for a party scene head to St_Anton, or if you want more shopping and restaurant options then nearby Lech may be a better base for your ski holiday.

Getting to Zürs

Innsbruck lies an hour and a half’s drive away to the east, whilst Zürich sits two hours to the west by car.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
