Although Wengen is famous for the fearsome Lauberhorn Downhill course – the longest and one of the toughest on the World Cup circuit – its slopes are best suited to intermediates.
The village was a farming community long before skiing arrived; it is still tiny, but dominated by sizeable hotels, mostly of Victorian origin. So it is not exactly chocolate-box pretty, but it is charming and relaxed, and almost traffic-free. The short main street is the hub. Lined with chalet-style shops and hotels, it also has the ice rink and village nursery slopes right next to it.
Wengen is an attractive and reassuring village for families. The nursery slope is in the centre and the Playhouse kindergarten is in the tourist office nearby. There’s loads to do off the slopes, in including tobogganing, curling, ice skating, swimming and winter walking.
If you’re used to raving in Kitzbühel or Val Thorens, Wengen is quiet on the après scene, especially for young people. But a number of bars are still popular at the end of the day, including the Pickel Bar, the ‘cosy’ bar of the Silberhorn Hotel, the traditional Tanne and the ‘lively’ Rocks Bar, with plasma screens showing Sky Sports.
On the mountain, the outdoor Läger Bar, next to the Männlichen chair, is good for sitting in a deckchair in the sun. Tipirama (a wigwam at Kleine Scheidegg) is a fun place immediately after skiing ‘if not too cold’, sometimes with DJs and live bands. The Wäsch bar at the Bumps section of the home run is a popular final-run stop-off.
Wengen’s enviable location on the northern side of the Swiss Alps makes it a dream to get to. The best way is to use Switzerland’s quick, clean and efficient railway network to deliver you directly from the airport to the heart of the resort. Journey times from Zurich Airport take around three hours, or from Geneva Airport four. If you are on a transfer or driving yourself, note that Wengen is mostly car free; vehicles stop in the valley at Lauterbrunnen, from where you hop on the train for the short but sharp climb up the side of the valley to Wengen.
Each area in the Jungfrau region, including the separate Grindelwald areas, employ separate opening and closing dates:
Individual area tickets are no longer available – instead, one lift pass now covers all Jungfrau resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren

Updated 30/12
The New Year dawns fine, dry and bright across the Swiss Alps with high pressure lingering across central and western Europe. This will change, however, as the week concludes with cold and unsettled conditions moving in from the East. Around 40cm of snowfall can then be expected over the whole region.
This will begin on Friday, before around a foot falls on higher ground over Saturday. The freezing line will hover around 2,000m, however this will plummet on Sunday meaning the last tail of this snowfall hits all elevations. Conditions then remain bitterly cold into the new week with more snowfall expected.

I first skied at Glenshee on a fine Scottish winter's day in 1982 and was immediately hooked. Luckily for me, during the early eighties I lived in Rome and spent many happy weekends skiing with friends in the easily accessible resorts of the Abruzzi mountains. I love Italian style, culture and language and travel there as often as I can. I have also been fortunate to live overseas in India and Egypt. For most of my career I worked as a government press officer, first at the Scottish Office and then at Energy and Trade and Industry. I am relatively new to the Ski Club of Great Britain having joined through Mountain Tracks, my favourite ski touring holiday company. I am very much looking forward to skiing with many of you over the coming seasons.
I learned to ski whilst serving with the Royal Air Force in Germany in the early 90s. I was hooked the first time I put a pair of skis on and can still remember the absolute joy of transitioning from snowplough to parallel. When I left the Service, I spent a season in Canada and qualified as a Level 2 Instructor. Unfortunately, life got in the way for a few years, and I didn’t ski often. But now I’m retired and looking forward to enjoying time in the mountains and skiing with great people. I look forward to meeting you.
I was hooked on skiing as soon as I started, at 19. So much so that I put my career plans on hold and by 21 I had secured a job as a chalet host and spent the 1990/91 season in the wonderful Zermatt.
I’ve been an avid holiday skier ever since, sampling many resorts across the Alps, Norway and the USA. Highlights have been teaching my 3 year old son to ski (some time ago now), spending 4 years in the Rocky Mountains, during which time I was able to experience its legendary deep, dry powder, and becoming a Ski Club of Great Britain Rep.  I love all skiing, from carving out glorious arcs on groomed blues, through gnarly black bump runs and off-piste adventures when conditions are favourable. Eager to meet new friends to ski with and chat with on the chairs and in the cafes. I look forward to meeting you soon.
I love the outdoors, and the combination of snow and mountains creates a special attraction. For many years I have introduced friends and family to skiing, helping them to develop and share in a great sport and environment. I saw being a Rep as a chance to meet new people, make friends, and share this passion. My other passion is rugby, which I played for over 30 years, and have also coached and refereed. I also enjoy scuba diving, which I have pursued in many countries, and one of the most interesting was an ice-dive at Tignes-le-lac.
Welcome to paradise. That's the feeling I get when I come to one of these fantastic ski resorts. I've always loved skiing and snow ever since I was a little kid living in southern Sweden. I started alpine skiing when I was 10 and competed as a junior for 5 years. After that, I've travelled around Europe every winter to ski from above the Arctic Circle down to southern Spain. I met my wife who also loves skiing so it was a perfect match. Our daughter competed in alpine skiing for 10 years and during that time I got involved as a race coach for the local ski club. As a pensioner, I then worked for a few winters as a ski instructor in Austria and Norway. By chance, I found out about SCGB and saw this as a very nice concept and now I will represent the club for a few weeks. Looking forward to meeting you all in the wonderful Junfrau massif. Let it snow
