Skiing Today

With many of this week's regular members choosing to "family ski" rather than "social ski" today it was a rather more select group that started the day on the sunnyMannlichen slopes, looping the chair and the mid-station before heading over to Kleine Scheidegg where we encountered some thick cloud at the top of Honegg. The pistes were in great condition so we enjoyed a fall-line run down in grippy snow before meeting a couple of additional members up at the top of the Arven chair. We then played hide-and-seek with the sun and the clouds, almost always finding fair weather and wither great corduroy or grippy snow on the Fallboden and Wixi runs. After that we explored the Lauberhorn black 41 past Grindelwaldblick and the Eigernordwand bowl ("punch bowl") before once again summiting Honegg for a wonderful high-speed blast down to Tschuggen. From Tschuggen we looped back to Holenstein and partook of lunch once again at the sun-soaked Vorsass-Stuba. The curry soup and minestrone soup both went down a treat, as did the Chasbratel (cheese on toast). From lunch we skied down to Grund before riding the new gondola and returning to Kleine Scheidegg for some final loops of the Lauberhorn and Wixi chairs and our descent to Wengen via the downhill course.

Snow overview for Switzerland

21 February 2020

Sunshine, a few clouds and a couple of snow flurries were found in the Swiss Alps on Friday. Some very good skiing can be found up high in particular, after 5-15cm of new snow on Wednesday.

Although the off piste is limited at present, there’s been some good skiing reported in Verbier and Crans Montana in the west of the country, and Arosa and Laax in the east. There are some lift queues as a result of the half term crowds, but these do tend to disperse throughout the day.

Warm sunshine is expected at the weekend to wrap up the holiday period, before colder and snowier air moves in on Tuesday night and into Wednesday. There’s the potential then for some big snowfall totals.
