The new Entry/Exit system is now live, with a phased roll-out over this winter – find out more below.

The new Entry/Exit System, or EES, has now launched across Europe, and change the border checks undertaken when you enter the European Union or Schengen Area.
Be prepared when travelling this winter

Changing EU Border Procedures

EES should not be confused with the new ETIAS pre-clearance system, rolling out in 2026 – it is a different system to EES and will require completion before you travel to the EU or Schengen Area.

Summary

Be prepared when travelling to the EU and Schengen Area from 2025:

  • EES is designed to replace passport stamps from its rollout
  • Ireland and Cyprus are exempt from EES rollout
  • EES can be quicker than manual passport checks
  • Rollout will be in phases over a six month period, so border procedures may differ between borders even in the same country during this period
  • Disruption is being experienced, particularly at existing choke points such as Geneva or Lisbon
  • EES is being used more often when leaving Europe – leave extra time on your return journey
