We keep coming back and are proud to host our Reps Course here each winter.

Tignes shares the huge Tignes-Val d’Isère ski area with its eponymous neighbour Val d’Isère. Between the two there are 300km of pistes for all abilities, ranging from long gentle greens to seriously steep off piste. The lift system is very good after a lot of investment in recent years and even if the natural white stuff is lacking, a powerful snowmaking system and the Grande Motte Glacier ensure that snow reliability is as good as it gets.There are four separate villages to choose from. If you’re looking for guaranteed snow, good value accommodation, a lively nightlife and maximum practicality then Val Claret and Le Lac are your best bets. For a quieter, wooded setting then either Les Boisses and Les Brévières make a great base – especially for families.

On the Slopes

The slopes that make up the Tignes ski area are as snowsure as they come and offer great options for all abilities. There are good learning areas in both Val Claret and Le Lac, although these can be plagued by fast through traffic at the start and end of the day. For intermediate skiers the options are almost endless across the entire Espace Killy and the area is home to some of the finest off piste terrain in France.

For Beginners

Convenient learning zones are located in both Val Claret and Le Lac, as well as down at Les Boisses. Progression on to longer greens is possible but this is best on the Val_d’Isère side of the hill, where piste Verte from the Bellevarde and the entire Borsat area offer long, easy greens. The wide blue beneath the Grattalu chair is good for moving further forward, just take care on the resort return as there are a couple of steeper sections.

For Intermediates

Tignes provides some of the Alps’ best intermediate terrain. Our top pick is the long, undulating Génépy run down from the glacier and for quieter slopes the long blue from the top of the Aiguille Percée is a great option. Keen intermediates will want to cross over to Val_d’Isère – just note that the descent into the resort can be tricky, especially in icy conditions. But once you are in Val, there are some great intermediate slopes on the Solaise mountain.

For Advanced/Expert & Off Piste

There are some great options here, both on and off piste. For a long, steep descent on piste, ski the Sache all the way from the Aiguille Percée down to Les Brévières. Most of the other blacks have been converted to ungroomed ski routes, of which Golf and Campanules are popular. Over in Val_d’Isère the options are vast, from the Banane off the Bellevarde to the trees above Le Fornet – the ski area offers some fine off piste terrain.

In the Resort

Le Lac is probably the hub and is ideal for families as the best beginner zone is right at its heart, but each of the four main villages have their own centre and their own atmosphere. Val Claret is the most convenient base and has a vast range of mostly self-catered accommodation, but also some hotels. Both are lively at après time and well into the night. Les Boisses and Les Brévières are quieter and prettier, but access to the slopes of Val takes longer.

For Families

The options are great and there are loads of English-speaking companies that can assist with childcare. Le Lac is ideal as it’s right next to the best nursery slopes, but the lower villages are quieter. Off the snow there is loads to do, including an excellent swimming pool with slides in Le Lac, whilst the lake itself is a hub of winter activities – which includes dog sledding.

For Après

Tignes is one of the Alps’ liveliest resorts and the bars of both Le Lac and Val Claret fill up quickly at the end of the ski day – including Loop Bar, Le Coffee, Couloir and Drop Zone. Keen revellers should head to the Folie Douce above Val d’Isère – just don’t miss the last lift up the Tommeuses and note that the ski down from the Tovière isn’t the easiest. If you want to continue the party into the early hours, Melting Pot is usually full of seasonnaires.

Getting to Tignes

As it sits right at the end of the valley, the transfer to Tignes is quite a long one. Chambéry is the closest airport at around two hours away, whilst Geneva sits approximately three hours away. Lots of companies offer shared transfers, especially from Geneva.

A great option is to travel by train, catching the Eurostar and TGV to the town of Bourg St Maurice in the valley before grabbing a quick bus transfer up to the resort. Check out the Ski Club’s Guide to travelling to resort by train.

Day and half-day passes are available for Tignes only – anything more than this will cover the entire Espace Tignes-Val d’Isere. All ski passes of six or more days include an extra day for free, as well as unlimited access to the Lagon swimming pool. Skiing is free for those under the age of eight or older than 75 – stop by the lift pass office to collect your free pass!

A reduced rate is available for skiing from season opening until 20th December 2025.

Don’t forget your Ski Club membership card – you can load your ski passes onto it either online or at the lift pass office

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.

As part of the French Flocon Vert (tr. Green Snowflake) scheme, Tignes has been awarded one snowflake out of a possible three, representing significant investment in resources to reduce its environmental impact. Flocon Vert is an independent scheme operated by Mountain Riders, which accredits resorts in France who have met twenty criteria based on environmental, social and economic sustainability.

Tignes was first accredited in 2022
The resort has successfully diversified into an all-year-round destination to promote economic resilience
Of particular note is the implementation of a sustainable waste water strategy

After a relatively mild spell, dominated by dry weather and high pressure, things turn colder and snowier over the Christmas period – this will be limited to resorts hugging the Italian border, however, as this snow is driven by a “Retour d’Est” system making its way across northern Italy.

A cold front will begin to push into the northern Alps on Christmas day, bringing moderate snow to resorts at higher elevations. Expect snowfall around 800m, with accumulations of 5-10cm across higher ground. Temperatures will dip to -4°C at 2,000m, making for crisp, wintry conditions. This will continue into Boxing Day with a further 15cm expected down.

Conditions will shift again as the weekend begins, with high pressure and fine, dry and bright conditions returning to the Alps. The freezing line will remain cold, hovering around 1,000m throughout.

Skiing is so addictive, isn’t it?

The thrill of the descent, the stunning mountain views, the cold fresh air, the crunch of snow underfoot and the vibrant Apres ski. Oh, and memories which last a lifetime! Despite skiing for over 30 yrs in resorts all over the world, and a career in ski media nearly all my working life, my passion for the sport remains unabated.

On planning retirement, the key question was how am I going to continue to feed this love of the mountains and give something back to the sport? Having worked for the Ski Club for many years and skied with its Reps on several occasions, I understood the value of the product and admired it greatly. So there was the solution: join the fold, which I did in 2018! I look forward to meeting you soon and sharing our passion.

I learned to ski in a field, most of the time was spent walking up but it was great. I still love it all, cruising the pistes, exploring, visiting favourite restaurants, and generally being in the mountains. My repping adventure began in 2015 and helping people make the most of their holidays has been a lot of fun. I also enjoy cycling, tennis, running and hill-walking – especially in the Lakes and Scotland. Next season is approaching; I’m excited and look forward to sharing a ski with you.

Hi, I'm David, and I've been riding the snow on skis and boards since I started work... I mostly ski these days, and whilst I love a good powder day ( who doesn't!) I also enjoy a good piste blast. I'm equally happy with a nice mountain coffee or vin chaud, and always keen to sample mountain cuisine. Favourite spots - anywhere it’s snowing! When I’m not skiing, I’m usually found in a dinghy, on a bike, or behind a camera. Ciao!

Since taking a very early retirement I’ve been able to fuel my snow addiction! I now spend most of my winters somewhere in the mountains. In the past couple of years I’ve spent time exploring some of the less known ski mountains of British Columbia and Japan as well as returning to my European favourites of Tignes and Sauze d’Oulx.

If there’s fresh pow then you’ll find me on the first lift and riding fresh lines until my legs can take no more! However, I also love cruising the blues or going for a blast. In short I just love being in the mountains and skiing and meeting new people along the way!

When not skiing I can be found running around the parks and canals of East London. I’m also a dinghy sailor. I helm a Vago and a newly acquired RS500.

I look forward to meeting you all somewhere in the mountains soon!

My love for skiing began in primary school, when my family took me to the Lecht in Scotland. I loved skiing from the outset, it has been my passion for 40 years already! I didn’t ski abroad until I was in my 20s and found the alps to be quite different to Scottish skiing (no snow fences to hold the snow on the hill, away from the wind for a start). The Ski Club has introduced me to so many new friends and amazing people who all share a love for the mountains & skiing. The club has also improved my off-piste skiing and awareness of safety in the mountains as well as my first aid skills and people management/ customer service skills. I have repped in European resorts up until now but this year I am super excited to be the resort rep in Whistler from January 26^th – February 14^th. I look forward to meeting and skiing with as many of you as possible in Whistler this winter.
