Below are some reasons why you should choose Japan and JAL for your next snow adventure.
JaPow Factor
Japanโs snow season runs from late November to late March. With consistent, high-quality snow throughout the season, Japan offers fantastic alpine skiing, as well as JaPow (Japan powder) – some of the best powder snow in the world! Japanโs average snowfall is 10m, with areas of Hokkaido getting double that amount!! Skiing and snowboarding holidays in Japan are terrific value for money, even when compared to the cost of European, and North American resorts.
Unique Aprรจs Ski
After a busy day out on the snow chill out in a lively Japanese pub, known as an izakaya. Sup on refreshing craft or draft beer or try out the local sake (rice wine) or shochu (traditional distilled liquor). Enjoy traditional Japanese winter food such as nabe: a hearty hotpot dish made with meat or seafood, tofu, and vegetables all cooked in a tasty, warming broth.
The Hot Stuff & Culture Country
The perfect way to relax and ease sore muscles following a hard day on the slopes is to take a dip in an onsen: natural hot springs common in most Japanese snow resorts. You can even watch cute Japanese macaques soaking in the onsen of the Snow Monkey Park in Nagano. Japan is bountiful not only in snow, but also in all manner of culture, including temples, shrines, and festivals of which the Sapporo Snow Festival with its spectacular snow and ice carvings attracts people from far and wide.
Traditional Retreats
With accommodation to suit all budgets, Japan has nearly 550 snow resorts across Japan. Why not stay in a tatami-matted room at a traditional Japanese inn, called a ryokan. For dinner wear yukata, a casual type of kimono; and eat some of the best Japanese cuisine you can find. Whatever your budget, Japanโs warm, welcoming, under-stated hospitality will be ever-present during your stay.
Getting you to the Slopes
Fly to Haneda Tokyo on JALโs double daily direct service from Heathrow Airport. The airline also offers indirect services from the UK via its other European hubs of Frankfurt, Helsinki, and Paris. From Tokyo, get to the slopes by either jumping on a bullet train (Shinkansen) across to the snow resorts of Nagano or Niigata in the Japanese Alps, or catch one of JALโs numerous domestic flights serving the winter wonderlands of Hokkaido or Tohoku.
