Nestled in the western Austrian state of Tyrol, the Ötztal Valley is best known for its renowned ski resorts, Sölden and Obergurgl-Hochgurgl. With high-altitude slopes and glacier skiing, the region offers reliable snow conditions from November through to early May, making it a popular destination for both early and late-season skiing.
Together, Sölden and Obergurgl-Hochgurgl provide almost 250m of ski terrain, attracting skiers and snowboarders from across Europe each winter. The season begins with the excitement of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup races, hosted in the resorts during October and November.

Beyond the slopes, the Ötztal Valley is known for its vibrant winter events calendar. One highlight is Hannibal – the Glacier Spectacle, an open-air production inspired by Hannibal’s legendary crossing of the Alps. Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Rettenbach Glacier and staged every two years, the event attracts visitors from around the world.
The valley also hosts lively mountain festivals featuring internationally recognised DJs and artists throughout the season, offering visitors far more than just skiing.
