The lowest and quietest of the resorts in the Gastein Valley, Dorfgastein is a good base for exploring the linked slopes with Grossarl.

Sitting a couple of kilometers down the valley from Bad_Hofgastein, Dorfgastein is home its own ski area, comprised of 65kms of slopes with neighbouring Grossarl.

A network of mostly red runs opens up to provide excellent skiing for intermediates, as well a few steeper challenges for more advanced skiers. The lift system is good and intrepid skiers and riders will want to catch the ski bus up to Bad Hofgastein and take the swish new Schlossalm lift up to the snowsure slopes of the wider ski area.

The village itself is quieter than its neighbours up the valley, without the same selection of world-class spas that Badgastein is famous for. That being said it makes for an attractive base, especially with the access to the Grossarl ski area. Access from Salzburg is very quick and easy, making this a good weekend destination, or one to tie in with a city break in the picturesque city.

The weekend starts mild across the region, with the freezing line ticking up to 4,000m. This sits under a layer of cloud cover, which will bring with it precipitation; this will fall as snow in many areas, as the freezing line drops from this peak as low as 1,500m over the course of the weekend.

Western areas will see around 12cm of snow, with easterly and southern areas seeing perhaps a foot on Monday along, with another 10cm before and after. This will remain across higher ground, as the freezing line doesn’t dip below 2,000m during this snowy period.

Unsettled conditions continue over the course of this week, with more snow on the way in parts.
