Obertauern's combination of attractions is unique. If you're hooked on Austrian mountain huts and après-ski but looking for a change from slush and ice at village level, moving up in the world by 1000m or so could be just the ticket. But note the minus points above. Obertauern is a mainly modern development set high on top of the Tauern pass. The slopes and lifts form a snow-sure circuit around the village.

Excellent snow record

Quite a lot of ski-in/ski-out lodging

Efficient modern lifts

Good mountain restaurants

Village not notably charming

Slopes limited in extent - and in vertical, in particular

A bleak place in bad weather

Few off-slope diversions

Getting there

  • Munich airport: 3 hours
  • Salzburg airport: 1.5 hours
  • Radstadt train station: 30 minutes
