Snow overview for Austria

10 March 2020

A nordstau event – triggered by a northerly jet stream hitting the mountains, rising rapidly, cooling and triggering snowfall – has kept the Austrian Alps with the freshest snow in Europe over the past few weeks, building on the considerable and solid base left behind by early season’s snowfall.

This event is expected to end in the coming days as the jet stream changes direction, to hit the alps from the west. This will bring an area of low pressure towards Europe, which, whilst expecting to stall and fade by the end of the week in the Bay of Biscay, will still blow some precipitation onto the Alps.

The remains of this event will continue on into Thursday, bringing a cover of snow for higher areas of Austria, especially near the Italy border.

This snow will remain patchy, however, as lower in the Tirol will struggle. In particular, the Inn and Salzach valleys and associated resorts will not see snow until after this weekend.
