An attractively transformed farming hamlet of chalets and orchards, on the fringe of La Plagne's ski area and connected to the vast Paradiski domain. The cable car link with Les Arcs starts from here, 300m/980ft above the village and reached by a fast chair. Getting to La Plagne involves a series of lifts and the way home has some of the trickiest blue runs we have encountered. But with 225km of main slopes to explore, of which 85% are blue or red, it's an intermediate's paradise. And Montchavin's local slopes have quite a bit to offer too: pretty, sheltered runs, well endowed with snowmaking. There are nursery slopes at village level and up at Plan Bois, above Les Coches, now reached by a six-pack. The village has adequate shops, a kindergarten and ski school. The lack of on-piste challenges is an important flaw, though.
