In the Ski Club office we have over 50 winter seasons between us. That means we’ve visited a lot of resorts and have a lot of stories to tell (and some which we can’t as well)! We’ve collected the below stories from people around the office which will hopefully make you even more excited for your season (rather than scaring you off).

Frankie

How many seasons did you do and where? 3 – St Anton (Austria) x 2 and Niseko (Japan)

What jobs did you do? Hotel bar/reception work, working in a pizza restaurant and head chalet host

What are your top tips? Pack enough toiletries and medication for the season if you can – they’re expensive in the mountains! Also I’d recommend taking photos to put up in your bedroom to make it feel more like home

What was your best experience? The last day of the season we did a team sunrise hike to celebrate the winter, then straight after I skied down and went paragliding. The best way to say goodbye to the town!

What was your worst experience? Transfer days/having to go home.

Holly

How many seasons did you do and where? 1 – Sunshine Village (Canada)

What jobs did you do? Lift operator

What are your top tips? Go to thrift shops for cheap ski gear and save up

What was your best experience? Too difficult to just choose one - Playing ice hockey, seeing a bear, social life at work and in Banff (especially liftie jug nights) and ravelling in Canada and Alaska at the end of the season

What was your worst experience? Arriving home or not budgeting well at the beginning of the season and having to struggle through the rest of the season!

Kat

How many seasons did you do and where? 1 – Vaujany (France)

What jobs did you do? Rep and driver

What are your top tips? Save up, know how long you want to be away for, research the resort and amenities (check where the pharmacy is) and most importantly get exercising!

What was your best experience? Being asked to sit with guests at dinner and drinks on the last night of each group’s stay and day off trips to other resorts

What was your worst experience? Being over tired on a changeover day with guests who arrive in the morning! Or having to clean the boot room – that was pretty painful also

Ellie

How many seasons did you do and where? 1 – Val-d'Isère (France)

What jobs did you do? Chalet host

What are your top tips? Save up – most ski resorts aren’t cheap! You should also make sure to research resorts and choose based on the vibe that you think will most suit you

What was your best experience? Weekly prosecco picnics at the top of the mountain on days off – favourite spot was under the eye of the needle in Tignes

What was your worst experience? Changeover days – they don’t get better the more you do them!

Chris

How many seasons did you do and where? 1 – USA & Canada

What jobs did you do? Freelance writer and ski bum

What are your top tips? Check out ski pass deals and multi-resort options, plan travel between resorts and save up

What was your worst experience? Drunk Airbnb host in Aspen

Emily

How many seasons did you do and where? 1 – Alpe d’Huez (France)

What jobs did you do? Chalet host

What are your top tips? Be open to resorts and jobs where possible, make a packing list (this isn’t a plug for our ‘what to pack’ article … promise) and also make sure to take appropriate footwear (you might also coincidentally notice this in our ‘what to pack’ article)

What was your best experience? All of it, honestly can’t recommend seasons enough!

What was your worst experience? Knocking myself out and cracking 6 ribs!

Amanda

What are your top tips? It’s ok to go somewhere on your own as you will meet lots of fun, like-minded people and make friends for life

What was your best experience? Hanging out in a ski resort that feels like home or going to the local après ski

What was your worst experience? Without a doubt living in a tiny apartment in Val-d'Isère with parties in the corridor every night!

Pete

How many seasons did you do and where? 1 – Alpbach

What jobs did you do? Freelance journalist and instructor

What are your top tips? Pack the essentials and enjoy the ride!

What was your best experience? Seeing Dave Ryding finish 2nd in the Kitzbühel slalom world cup

What was your worst experience? Nearly getting lost in Tignes after a night out
