Despite boasting an impressive 120km of pistes in the linked ski area, the main attractions lie beyond the run markers.

The Gemsstock mountain is home to some of the globe’s premier off-piste opportunities. Andermatt enjoys its own snowy microclimate, with the mountain’s north-facing aspect further enhancing its appeal and ensuring consistently excellent snow quality. A recent investment of 1.8 billion CHF has revitalised the resort, bringing impressive new hotels and vastly improved dining and shopping options.

On the Slopes

Most people come here for the epic descents down from the summit of the Gemsstock and for good reason – it is one of the Alps’ finest areas for steep skiing and snowboarding.

However, beginners and intermediates should not be put off, as the new lifts and link to Sedrun have opened up some fantastic cruising terrain. The offering for beginners has improved markedly in recent years, and there is a good, sunny beginner zone at Nätschen. From here, the long winding blue back down to the resort and the open blues up by Gütsch offer good progression.

There are also some great, snowsure runs for intermediates in the linked ski area and also on Gurschenalp below the Gemsstock. You get a real sense of travel by reaching the far end at Sedrun and all of it can be done on well-groomed reds.

This is where the ski area really comes into its own. The entire Gemsstock mountain is a freerider’s paradise, with steep descents and big vertical on every run. Hire a guide or visit on a Ski Club Freshtracks Holiday to experience the very best of this epic sector. Towards Sedrun there is also some good off piste and several blacks – which are a blast when freshly groomed.

In the Resort

The town is quietly attractive and the scenery surrounding it is dramatic. Charming old houses line the main street, which runs from the central river bridge to the Gemsstock cable car. Most of the new development is on the margins, out past the station.

For Families

Andermatt has become better for families, and the beginner area up at Nätschen is becoming increasingly good for children. Off the slopes there are some excellent winter walking trails and a great sledging run down to the village.

For Après

Andermatt is quiet on the après front and a quiet beer or glühwein is the local way to end the skiing day. In town, the Piccadilly Pub and De Prato are lively, while the luxury Chedi hotel bar is a classy place to have a post- skiing drink.

Getting to Andermatt

Travelling by train is the most convenient and efficient way to reach Andermatt. As it is quite a compact resort, the use of a car really isn’t necessary. For the average train times from the closest airports, please see below.

Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis operates different dates for different sectors:

Gemsstock: November 16 2024 to April 21 2025
Andermatt-Oberalppass-Sedrun: December 14 2024 to April 6 2025 (weekend opening may take place earlier in December depending on conditions)
Disentis: December 21 2024 to April 6 2025 (also weekend 14/15 December and between 7 and 21 April, depending on conditions)

Lift Pass Prices

Andermatt has not yet confirmed lift pass prices for the 2024/25 season. The below is based on 2023/24 lift pass prices. Andermatt has previously operated a dynamic lift pass pricing system, with pricing fluctuating depending on the weather, demand, day of the week and on how far in advance you purchase your ticket.

Andermatt now features on the Epic Pass, giving great value access to a huge range of resorts across North America and some select European destinations.

the first Nordstau of the season (in late March, would you believe it) is set to bring excellent conditions across particularly eastern reaches of the country through the middle of this week. Unsettled conditions moving in from the north plummet temperatures, with the freezing line taking a long walk off a short pier through this period; dropping from a daytime high above 2,000m on Wednesday to sea level overnight into Friday.

With this unsettled weather will come excellent snowfall; the west will see useful top ups of around 20cm falling on Wednesday afternoon and throughout Thursday, whereas the east will see bumper conditions with up to 2ft expected down at the same time. This will peak on Thursday, when c.50cm is expected down over higher ground.

Expect the avalanche forecast to climb over this period, as this new snow may well be sitting on a spring freeze-thaw crust and/or a very wet snowpack thanks to spring melt.

Things will return to a more spring-like norm as the weekend arrives, with spring freeze-thaw cycles in play and plenty of sun; a few lingering clouds will bring snowfall on Sunday and into the new week, but it remains a bit too far out to say exactly how much will fall, when, and where.
