From either side of the village, fast lifts whisk you into the Sella Ronda circuit.

Take the cable cars or gondolas for the clockwise circuit or the high speed quad for the anticlockwise route. The local slopes are amongst the steepest in the area, so if you’re a more advanced skier, this will be the place to base yourself as much of the other terrain in the area is more gentle. If this wasn’t enough, the Dolomiti Superski lift pass covers 1000km of slopes at numerous resorts nearby – you’d do well to cover all in a season let alone a week.

On the Slopes

Arabba is not a great choice for beginners, the only nursery zone is near the bottom of the Burz chair and is unfortunately a bit steep. For intermediates however this is the ideal resort and the Sella Ronda circuit is within reach of confident intermediates. The pistes are usually very well groomed and thanks to near complete snowmaking coverage, good conditions can be guaranteed throughout the winter.

Some of the offshoots from the main circuit are also well worth exploring, especially the Marmolada Glacier and the gentle blues of Pralongia above Alta Badia. More advanced skiers will enjoy the long blacks from the top of Porto Vescovo just outside of the resort and on powder days there is some good terrain if you know where to look.

In the Resort

The village is small and traditional in style, but not notably picturesque despite the spectacular scenery. It is a true skiers resort, with low key nightlife, though there is great cuisine both in town and on the mountain – most of which is very good value. There is also a small range of shops and bars, all perfect for some relaxed downtime after a long day on the mountain.

Getting to Arabba

There are two main airport options, Venice and Verona, both of which are between two and three hours drive away from the resort.

Venice airport: 2.5 hours

Italy will barely benefit from the Nordstau conditions dominating through the middle of this week across the rest of the Alps, sitting as it does on the wrong side (for perhaps the first time this season) of the Main Alpine Ridge. It will not be without cold and snow, however, as the same cold conditions do make it over the Alps; in msot palces the freezing line drops from above 2,000m early this week to seas level by close of play on Thursday.

A few flurries will make it through; the best of this will be on higher ground closer to the ridge, with around 20cm expected down at Cervinia over the course of Wednesday and Thursday. This will be reduced to a few flurries in the Via Lattea or over the Dolomites.

A brief burst of sunshine follows for many areas, before the last few tails of cloud bring with them some more snow into the new week; it remains too early to tell exactly when and where this will fall, and how much, but the southwest seems to be getting the best of it.
