Located at 1800m, Avoriaz is one of the most snow-sure resorts in the Portes du Soleil and a great choice for an early season ski holiday.

The resort is completely car-free and snow-covered throughout winter, with all accommodation offering ski-in/ski-out access. From Avoriaz, keen skiers can explore the full Portes du Soleil ski area with its 600km of slopes.

Located at 1800m, Avoriaz is one of the most snow-sure resorts in the Portes du Soleil and a great choice for an early season ski holiday.

The village’s tall apartment blocks are instantly recognisable, sitting high on a plateau above the village of Morzine below. It is traffic free as all visitors must park in car parks on the outskirts of town – book a space underground to save yourself from having to dig your car out after a snowstorm – so the resort makes for a great location for a family ski holiday. Add to this the quick transfer time from Geneva and the fact that the entire resort is ski-in-ski-out and Avoriaz is as convenient as it gets.

The local slopes are divided into four distinct sectors on the piste map – beginner, family, forest and expert. These should only be used as a guide but they do roughly split the resort in four. The sunny nursery slopes are good for beginners, as are the gentle blues towards Morzine, the forest area is ideal in bad weather whilst the family zone has variety for all. Experts will be kept happy in the area above Prodains or after fresh snowfall. And remember, the entire Portes du Soleil is just a couple of chairlift rides away, provided snow is good on the lower slopes.

For Beginners

Avoriaz has one of the largest dedicated beginner areas in the region, with 12km of slopes specifically designed for beginners in the Proclou area. Located close to the heart of the resort, the sunny greens and gentle blues provide an ideal environment for learning and building confidence. A dedicated beginner ski pass is also available, offering a more affordable option for those who are likely to use only a small number of lifts. Progression on to longer blues is good, especially in the Super Morzine sector and through the trees down to Lindarets and Ardent.

For Intermediates

The Portes du Soleil is a vast intermediate playground and the local slopes of Avoriaz encapsulate this. In particular, the Arare and Chavanette runs are wide pistes that are great for practising your turns. Further afield, the slopes around Les Crosets on the Swiss side are ideal for intermediate cruising and the long runs down into Morgins are a great option. Although it is a bit more of an effort to get to, exploring the tree-lined slopes of Les Gets is well worth it for confident intermediates.

For Advanced/Expert & Off Piste

With an average of 8m of snow per season, the slopes are not only among the region’s most snow-sure, but there is a good chance of catching some fresh powder, which is really when the ski area comes alive for advanced and expert skiers and boarders. Head to the long blacks above Prodains or down the infamous Swiss Wall towards Champéry.

Avoriaz is also home to four snowcross areas – ungroomed but secured areas that offer excellent opportunities for freeriding in a controlled environment. The resort also has one of the best terrain parks in the Alps and the excellent Burton Stash freestyle park in the woods by the Prolays chair.

Pros and cons

Large apartment blocks and hotels dominate the village, but whilst their size stands out, they are mostly wood-clad and thoughtfully designed. Avoriaz’s distinctive architecture was created to blend into its mountain setting, with the shape of the buildings and roofs designed to reflect the mountains directly opposite the resort. The stunning setting definitely helps, as do the snow-covered paths of the traffic-free town. Off the slopes there is lots to do, including dog-sledding and horse-drawn sleigh rides, whilst Aquariaz – a huge tropical-themed indoor pool complex – is a particular hit with families.

For Families

The traffic-free resort is ideal for families, especially as the beginner slopes are located right in the heart of the village. The Village des Enfants has a good reputation and excellent facilities for children. As mentioned, there is loads to do away from the slopes.

For Après

The 2018/19 season saw the opening of La Folie Douce in Avoriaz, which has proven to be a fantastic addition to the après offering. Other popular options include The Globe Trotter, Chez Zaza 2, Shooters and The Place.

For those looking to combine skiing with partying, Rock on Snow is a major highlight of the opening weekend in December. The event is one of the biggest ski tests in the Alps, with plenty of opportunities to try the latest equipment alongside a lively après-ski atmosphere.

At the other end of the season, Avoriaz’s Closing Week takes place during the final week of opening and is known for some of the biggest après-ski celebrations of the season. It is a particularly good time to visit for those looking for a combination of spring skiing, events and nightlife.

Lift Pass Prices

Updated for 2026/27

Portes du Soleil lift passes give access to the full 600km ski area, covering Avoriaz and the wider Portes du Soleil. Passes are available from one to five days, with different rates available for children, juniors, adults, seniors and super seniors.

The prices shown in the table above are the online rates for the 2026/27 season. Prices vary depending on the period of the season, with different rates applying from 20 March 2027 onwards.

A €3 hands-free card is required for lift passes. Children under five can ski for free with proof of age; their pass must be collected from a ticket office.

Green Credentials

Getting to Avoriaz

The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.

Morzine-Avoriaz was awarded the Flocon Vert (Green Snowflake) label in September 2021, recognising its commitment to sustainable development. The independent label, awarded by Mountain Riders, assesses mountain destinations against 20 criteria across four key areas: governance and destination, local economy, social and cultural issues, and natural resources and ecology. The destination is currently undergoing the renewal process for its Flocon Vert accreditation.

Avoriaz has been a pioneer in sustainable resort design since its creation, with its 100% pedestrianised, car-free concept designed into the resort from the outset. In winter, the streets become snow-covered routes for skiers and pedestrians, with horse-drawn sleighs providing transport around the resort. This approach helps reduce reliance on private vehicles and is a distinctive part of Avoriaz’s identity.

The wider Morzine-Avoriaz destination is also working to encourage more sustainable travel, including public transport, car sharing and softer forms of mobility. Its sustainability work covers areas including local economic development, environmental protection, social and cultural initiatives, and the preservation of natural resources.

Avoriaz continues to develop its approach to sustainable tourism, working with local authorities, the ski area operator, tourism organisations and other local partners to coordinate and improve its environmental and social initiatives.
