Two mountains extend up from either side of the valley town of Bardonecchia.

Jafferau is higher and more snowsure, with most of the best terrain well above 2000m – terrain suited best to intermediates. There is a free bus between the city and Jafferau. The Colomion side of the valley was the hill that hosted the freestyle events at the 2006 Turin Olympics and you can still ride the Olympic halfpipe at Melezet. This area of varied slopes has better variety as it is home to the best beginner zones, as well as some steeper challenges and some very accessible off piste towards the summit.

Pros and cons

On the Slopes

Much of the resort’s terrain lies on the Colomion sector. At the base there is a good learning area, whilst lying above this is a network of pretty, tree- lined slopes that are well covered by snowmaking to make up for their relatively low altitude. By continuing to ski left you will find the freestyle zone used in the Winter Olympics – if you’re brave enough the halfpipe is well worth giving a go! The smaller Jafferau ski area extends to the resort’s high point of 2694m, although a short hike can get you right up to the summit. This area is suited to intermediate skiers, who will certainly enjoy the long reds and blues above the treeline – just watch out as the return run can be tricky at the end of the day.

Bardonecchia is a decent sized town that does lack a little bit of ski resort atmosphere. That being said, access from Turin is very easy (there is a direct train from the centre to the resort), accommodation is very reasonably priced and there is a good range of restaurants serving good Piedmont food.

In the Resort

There are plenty of hotels to choose from, many of which offer great value rooms – especially during the week. Many are centred around the town centre and train station, but the old Olympic Village or the hotels at the foot of the halfpipe in Melezet provide good alternatives.

Food in the valley and up on the hill is of a good standard, with Italian specialities dominating menus across the resort, all for reasonable prices. Away from the slopes, there are over 20km of groomed cross country trails to explore, 12km of marked and prepared shoeshoeing routes and an ice rink.

Getting to Bardonecchia

Bardonecchia is well connected to nearby Turin, with a brand new motorway installed along the length of the Val de Susa in time for the Turin 2006 Winter Olympics, which saw some events staged in Via Lattea. As a result, transfer times can be as little as 40 minutes from Turin Airport. Regular train services run from Turin & Turin Airport along the valley, stopping at Bardonecchia.

Via Lattea has offered discounts on lift passes in previous years for arriving in the resort by train, although this promotion has not been confirmed as running for the 2024/25 – keep an eye on the Via Lattea website for more details. Since late 2023, the railway line between Italy and France via Modane and Grenoble has been shut owing to a landslide near Modane. As a result, international TGV and Frecchiarossa services have been unable to serve the Via Lattea, and will continue to do so until “at least early 2025”. It is recommend to plan your travel carefully to avoid this disruption.

Spring conditions will dominate across the Italy throughout this week and into the weekend, with something akin to a freeze-thaw cycle moving into the region.

Northerly areas will see a few flurries of snowfall through the middle of this week; up to 5cm can be expected down on Thursday in the Dolomites, with 5cm preceding this in the northwest through Tuesday and Wednesday. Conditions will remain fairly consistent heading towards the weekend, before the freezing line drops dramatically into the weekend hitting below 1,000m overnight Saturday into Sunday.

This will see unsettled weather and snowfall at the same time, with 25 to 30cm expected over westerly reaches; this will drop to just a few flurries in the Dolomites.

A mix of sun or cloud – and potentially some snow – will continue into the new week.
