Freshtracks holiday

We have a Ski Club Freshtracks holiday based in Canazei this season, using the resort as a springboard to explore the Sella Ronda.

The main gondola from town takes you up to the circuit, with its vast network of lifts and runs around the mighty Sella Ronda massif.

Most of the individual runs may be short and predominantly easy, but the distances you can cover on skis are huge and the lift system is on the whole very good, making the area great for intermediates looking to cover some serious ground. There’s also some great local skiing above Campitello and Pozza di Fassa – at the latter, the slopes are notably quieter. Canazei itself is an attractive town with bags of traditional Italian charm and some fantastic restaurants.

On the Slopes

For beginners there are two options, a gentle zone on the edge of the village, or a higher, more snowsure sector up at the top of the Ciampac gondola.

Progression on to long, gentle blues is adequate and some of the more gentle reds are also within reach for relatively inexperienced skiers and boarders.

The rest of the Val di Fassa and the Sella Ronda is one big intermediate paradise. Confident skiers should be more than capable of completing the full circuit, but if you’re looking for quiet slopes head towards Pozza di Fassa, away from the busier slopes of the Sella Ronda. Advanced skiers and boarders have a fairly limited selection of groomed blacks and some off piste – but this does rely on good natural snowfall, which at times can be limited.

In the Resort

The narrow cobbled streets and traditional-style buildings are attractively set beneath the most heavily wooded section of the Sella Ronda. The striking surroundings, traditional Italian charm and a great range of restaurants make it a great base for a week’s skiing, all on a very manageable budget – this is one of the best value resorts in Italy.
Canazei is one of the livelier resorts of the Sella Ronda, it has a good bustling feel while also retaining it’s Italian charm. Lively bars and endless options to sample fantastic Italian mountain cuisine make it an ideal destination for all groups – especially keen foodies.

There are two main airport options, Venice and Verona, both of which are between two and three hours drive away from the resort.

Good snowfall for many areas tapers off sharply as the new week begins; the Via Lattea will see a few last remaining flurries as the sun begins to fight its way through, and the freezing line beginning to pick up and move towards a more spring-like freeze-thaw pattern. Elsewhere, the Aosta sees half-a-foot of snow on higher ground on Tuesday with flurries continuing on to Wednesday; the freezing line will stay well below 1,000m, too, ensuring this snow reaches all elevations.

Thursday will see good snow good snow come to most areas, with at least 10cm down over western areas. The Dolomites will see excellent snow really for the first time this season, with around 40cm expected down on thursday – things remain cool, too, with the freezing line sitting at around 1,500m, meaning snow will reach all but the lowest elevations. Sun returns to this part of the region, with spring-like freeze-thaw patterns beginning to form as the weekend continues.

Cloud remains the theme of the week throughout the rest of the country.
