After a recent rebrand, southern Argentina's premier resort of Cerro Catedral is now referred to as Catedral Alta Patagonia,
reflecting its location in the famously beautiful mountain range that runs down the spine of South America. The scenery therefore does not disappoint, with spectacular views from all angles, but especially over the sparkling blue waters of the lake below.
With 34 lifts and covering an area of 3000 acres – making it larger than the likes of Jackson Hole – there is some great variety on offer on the skiing front. From gentle blues at mid-mountain level, to expert hike-to terrain from the top lifts, the ski area has something for everyone. Lift facilities here are better than most in South America, with a fast six-seater chair and a gondola accessing a big chunk of the ski area.
For accommodation, there are two options – either to stay down in the lakeside town of San Carlos de Bariloche, or up at the base of the ski area itself. The former has a bigger range of accommodation (most of which is also cheaper than up on the hill), plus a livelier nightlife and more restaurant options, but the latter is more convenient as you don’t need to make the 20-30 minute drive each way every day. Getting here from the UK is a long process, but there is an airport in San Carlos de Bariloche with direct flights to Buenos Aires taking only 2 hours.< Resort website: www.catedralaltapatagonia.com
