Since linking to the vast Saalbach-Hinterglemm Skicircus in 2015/16, Fieberbrunn has transformed from a sleepy backwater to a fantastic base to explore the 270km of linked Skicircus slopes.

Now directly linked to nearby Saalbach Hinterglemm and Leogang, as well as a shared lift pass with Zell am See Kaprun, there has never been a better time to ski here.

These connections add kilometre after kilometre of groomed pistes to the local Fieberbrunn area, making it a true all-round resort.Each year, the Freeride World Tour stops by and the world’s best athletes drop from the summit of the Wildseeloder, one of Austria’s most iconic freeride mountains. This summit is a short hike from the lift system, but there’s lots of lift-served off piste to keep even the keenest freerider happy, so this is a great choice if fat skis and powder are your thing.

In contrast, the village itself its quiet and traditionally Tyrolean, making it an attractive base if you fancy escaping the hustle, bustle and lively après of Saalbach. Getting here is simple as the resort sits approximately equidistant to both Salzburg and Innsbruck airports – with the transfer taking around an hour an half.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
