Fügen's location at the foot of the Zillertal mean it is often wrongly overlooked by those heading to Mayrhofen.

When the planned direct link to the Hochfügen is built in the coming years - this will become more so!

The small local ski area at Onkeljoch is great for a day, with a neat pod of intermediate-friendly slopes directly above the valley and a 5.5km tobogganing run which is popular for families. The big news however is the planned link to join up the local slopes to the wider ski area, incorporating it into the Kaltenbach-Hochfügen ski area and its 86km of linked slopes. A big new 3S gondola is planned for 2020/21 so keep an eye out as this will transform the ski area.

The town of Fügen is sizeable, with a good range of accommodation on offer and easy access to the slopes, both locally via a gondola and more widely via an efficient bus and train service. Alternative accommodation is available up the valley at Hochfügen, which would be good base if you’re looking for ski-in-ski- out hotels and a snowsure resort.

Things finally turn the corner for Austrian resorts this week after predicted snowfall stays away over the New Year period. Continuing high pressure means 2026 dawns fine, dry and bright, however more unsettled conditions and snow move in over this weekend.

Starting on Friday, steady snowfall will blanket almost all areas in Austria, with 15cm down at St Anton each on Saturday and Sunday. A freezing line staying around 1,000m means this will hit most elevations. Further south and east, this will bear the brunt of snowfall for the region and up to 2ft could be expected down on Sunday and into the new week.

Things remain cold and snow as the new week begins, with plenty more snowfall on the way.
