Tucked away in the far western corner of Austria, Gargellen is a small resort that certainly packs a punch.
It is located just over the Swiss border from the Madrisa ski area of Davos and is the next door valley from Silvretta_Montafon and as a result finds itself in one of the snowiest corners of the Alps. The local slopes are compact, covering 28km, but are very snowsure and usually very quiet. The highlights are the long descents back down to the valley and the off piste terrain, which features heavily on the piste map in the form of itinerary routes. Keen ski tourers should hire a guide and tackle the Madrisa Rundtour, the famous ski cross-border ski tour to Davos and back.
The shady village at the foot of the valley is very quiet and sleepy, providing rustic charm and a handful of tasteful, family-run hotels. These act as a great base from which to explore the ski area and it is possible to ski right back into the heart of town at the end of the day. Getting here takes a little longer than most Austrian resorts – it is around a 2 hour transfer from both Zürich and Innsbruck airports.

Austria’s historically slow start continues into Christmas, with resorts throughout the region experience low snow totals and continuing dry weather throughout. Things will remain fine, dry and bright with the occasional flurry of snowfall thanks to unsettled conditions moving over Italy, but not enough to write home about.
Temperatures remain cold, however, with the freezing line at 1,000m across the region, creating good conditions for running snow making.
