Though very much off the radar of British visitors, Heiligenblut offers a huge amount of freeride terrain, untouched snow, and access to some of the highest backcountry in Austria.

The picturesque village is set among beautiful surroundings at the foot of the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain.

Situated to the west of Badgastein, the slopes in Heiligenblut are quiet and are mainly blues and reds in two areas. The 12 lifts include three gondolas and serve 55km of groomed runs, though the extensive freeride terrain is the real draw. Due to the altitude, the resort’s six freeride arenas offer great snow for much of the season and the lack of crowds mean the slopes stay untracked for longer.

On the Slopes

The ski area has a decent network of blues and reds, dropping down from the Schareck mountain at 2604m. Even higher slopes can be found on Hochfleiss, where the long snowsure run 11 drops from 2902m right down to 1809m. Beginners will want to stay in the village, where two gentle learning areas can be found.

The main attraction however is the off piste terrain. After fresh snowfall, the lack of crowds means that plenty of excellent powder can be found within the lift served area – powder that typically remains untracked for longer than in most resorts. Touring equipment and a mountain guide will then get you into some of Austria’s finest backcountry – book on with Ski Club Freshtracks to do exactly this.

In the Resort

This is a quiet and pretty resort, set at just over 1300m at the foot of the ski area. It is instantly recognisable by the stunning church in the centre of town and the towering Grossglockner behind it. Small, family run hotels dominate the accommodation on offer – so expect to come here to ski and relax, this certainly isn’t an Austrian party town.

Getting to Heiligenblut

The small Klagenfurt airport is around two hours to the southeast of the resort, whilst Salzburg sits two and a half hours to the north. Innsbruck is an alternative, but the drive takes you via Italy and lasts around three and a half hours.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
