Forecast today: Occasional snow
Sitting at the end of the Tux Valley, an offshoot from the Zillertal, the Hintertux Glacier offers up some of the world’s most snowsure skiing. The slopes extend from 1500m in the valley to an elevation of 3250m on the iconic Gefrorene Wand and cover 60km – most of which are either on the glacier itself or are covered by a comprehensive snowmaking system. Much of the terrain suits intermediates, but there are some steeper challenges and once the snow cover has built up during the winter, there are some good off piste options too and the Better Park is one of the best around
Although most visitors come for the day up from the Zillertal Valley at resorts such as Mayrhofen, Zell am Ziller and Finkenberg, there is accommodation at the foot of the lifts or a kilometre down the valley in the small village of Hintertux. Both are quiet options, but its possible to ski back down to both at the end of the day (in the winter months at least).
As mentioned, there’s skiing up here all year round, making this one of the most popular summer ski areas in the Alps. Numerous race teams, the world’s best freestyle athletes and skiers keen to polish their technique ahead of the upcoming season flock here during the summer months. Unlike many other glacier resorts, the slopes at Hintertux have struggled less in recent years and decent skiing can usually be found in August and September when other places are closed.

Updated 24/03
After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
