If you're looking for easy access to a less well-known, but large Austrian ski area, then Hochfügen is a great option.
With ski-in-ski-out access to the linked slopes with neighbouring Kaltenbach, there’s also maximum convenience and thanks to the resort’s altitude of almost 1500m, it is one the the most snowsure resorts in the region. The terrain tends to favour intermediate skiers and boarders, but there’s good beginner terrain immediately above the village and decent steeper terrain across on the way to Kaltenbach. Whilst travelling across you’ll also notice the quality of the lifts – the lift system is one of the best around.
The village itself is quiet and pretty small, but there is the alternative to stay down in Fügen too if you’re after more variety on the accommodation, food and bar front. Keep an eye out too on the latest developments in the coming months as there are well-developed plans to link the resort by lift to the local slopes of Fügen, expanding the ski area further.

A tale of two halves over Austria this week, with western and eastern regions seeing different forecasts. Western areas will see steady flurries of snowfall through the middle of this week before fine, dry and bright conditions dominate on Thursday. The freezing will steadily decline over this period, starting at 2,000m and, with a few bumps along the way, float down to 500m on the weekend.
More snowfall will then come in over higher ground as the weekend begins, with 10cm expected down over Friday night and into Saturday. Things settle down, albeit remain cold and cloudy with more snowfall threatened in the new week.
Eastern areas will be far snowier through the middle of this week, with the potential for 20cm of snow down over Wednesday and Thursday. The freezing line will be higher, however, sitting around 2,000m for this period meaning snow will be limited to upper slopes. Things then cool off as the freezing line drops to 500m but things turn drier into the weekend and new week.
