Although the Vermont weather can be fickle at times, near 100% snowmaking coverage ensures that the pistes of Killington are snow-covered all winter.

Be prepared for bitterly cold weather, but if you don’t mind wrapping up warm, you’ll be rewarded with excellent tree-lined pistes, great glade skiing and a friendly welcome. Much of the accommodation is in well-appointed condo blocks and with a much shorter flight from the UK, this is a good option for an alternative family break.

Pros and cons

Tree-lined slopes with a lot of variety
Extremely comprehensive snowmaking and good lift system
Good variety of condominium accommodation

Accommodation is spread out along the resort access road
Vermont weather can be very fickle and bitter cold can be a problem
Not a great deal of off piste terrain due to thick forests

On the Slopes

With 190 trails to choose from, many of which are covered by a powerful snowmaking system, there is something for everyone at Killington. Snowshed provides one of the northeast’s best beginner zones and progression on the longer greens at Ramshead is excellent. Keen intermediates will be able to ski the entire area, with laps on the Snowdon Express 6-pack recommended along with a quiet cruise down Solitude off the back of the summit.

Fans of park skiing or riding are incredibly well catered for here. There is an 18 foot superpipe over at Bear Mountain and six terrain parks – which when open are home to an astonishing 150 features. Those keener to stick to the pistes will love the long blacks below the K-1 Express Gondola and the Superstar trail below the chair of the same name – which hosts annual World Cup races each December. The off piste is relatively limited, but after fresh snowfall, the gladed runs and trees become a fun powder playground.

In the Resort

Accommodation on the hill can be found at the Snowshed base, but also across at Sunrise where ski-in-ski-out condos are the order of the day. There are however few restaurants and bars to visit – it can be very quiet in the week in particular as many of the visitors come up from Boston or New York at the weekends.

Most people come and stay in condos or in lodges and B&Bs on the 5km access road up to the ski area from Highway 4. This is also where numerous restaurants and bars can be found. A bus service runs frequently to connect these locations, but having a car certainly makes getting around easier.

Getting to Killington

Boston is the closest major international hub at around three hours away from the slopes. To help get over the jetlag we’d recommend staying here for a couple of days and exploring one of the east coast’s most vibrant cities. New York is another option, but the drive is over four hours.

Amtrak serves nearby Rutland via the Ethan Allen Express – trains are once a day and take roughly 5 1/2hrs to make the trip to or from New York’s Penn Station (Moynihan Train Hall), so aren’t for those rushing to make a flight, but offer a scenic and relaxing alternative to driving. Transfers from Rutland are c.20mins on public busses.

By train: 5.5hrs from New York via Amtrak

The Left Coast’s bitterly disappointing season begins to sputter to its conclusion, as further mild conditions across most of the trans-Mississippi through this week and into the weekend. Many headline resorts have already announce their early closure before the end of the month, with barren slopes and shocking conditions the norm for the region.

A short snap of cold temperatures across the PNW and Tetons – as well as Montana and Idaho – may bring a short flurry to some areas.

Further east, things remain mostly cold for the region. Bitterly cold temperatures will be in play to start the weekend, but before that a short sharp burst of mild weather – timed to coincide with a burst of rainfall – does little to help the spring snowpack.
