With 152km of linked slopes with La Thuile, Italy - La Rosiere is an excellent ski area, and one not to miss.

Two new fast six-pack chairlifts were built up Mont Valaisan to open up a fantastic area of off piste, as well as five new red runs. This has added more advanced terrain to the ski area, making it more varied than ever before. Just make sure that if you’re crossing the Italian border you return before the last lifts close – the taxi ride back will be extremely expensive! The resort sits along the Col de Petit St Bernard road, which is closed off until the summer months and is therefore nice and quiet. Lots of rustic chalets, built in traditional Savoyard style, form the bulk of the accommodation in the resort. Don’t come here expecting a party, but there are some nice bars for a post-skiing drink, as well as several traditional restaurants.

On the Slopes

Just above the village lie the resort’s nursery slopes, all of which are sunny and gentle. Beyond this, learners will have to tackle the network of blues below Roc Noir, but most of these are pretty mellow. Once these are mastered, confident intermediates will have free reign over the linked ski area with La Thuile – just note that you need to catch long draglifts to get across.

The shadier slopes of La Thuile are slightly steeper, with lots of excellent groomed reds and a couple of blacks. Before the new lifts were built the challenges on the French side were somewhat limited, but the Mont Valaisan sector has several steeper red runs and is home to some fine off piste, particularly slightly later in the winter when the rocky terrain has been fully covered.

La Rosière Resort

The location of La Rosière means that it is nice and quiet in the winter – when the mountain pass is open, the road running through it can be busy. Throw in spectacular views over the Isère valley and the setting is ideal if you’re looking for a relaxing and picturesque stay.

Lots of the accommodation is in well-appointed chalets so you won’t need to eat out too often, but there are some good local eateries to choose from on your chalet host’s night off. Several bars are dotted around town too, offering a relaxed atmosphere – the après ski here is nothing like a few kilometres away in Val d’Isere.

Getting to La Rosiere

Getting here form Geneva and Chambery is easy, but transfer times are quite long. Perhaps the best way to arrive to the resort is to travel via the snow train and then catch the short bus ride up from Bourg St Maurice.

A promising week is in store for the French Alps, as the freezing line prepares to take a long walk off a short pier and plummet to finish off the week, as unsettled weather moves in at the same time. Snowfall already falling over the Alps will therefore being to reach lower slopes over the course of Thursday.

Friday will dawn cold as the freezing line hits 500m, and whilst it will recover over the course of the day it won’t climb too far above 1,500m. Snow will begin with flurries throughout the afternoon, then will continue for much of this forecast period. Around half-a-foot will fall over each of Saturday, Sunday and Monday, before the taps open on Tuesday and around 2ft of snowfall could be expected across higher ground – the freezing line will climb to 2,000m thereby limiting this snowfall across lower slopes, before falling again as Tuesday draws to a close.

This snow will fall on a persistent weak layer avalanche problem that has already caused havoc across the French Alps in previous weeks; expect the avalanche risk to climb considerably over this period. Check your local avalanche forecast and plan off piste and backcountry travel carefully.
