The local slopes above the village are amongst the quietest in the area and many won’t even need to explore the rest of the 270km network of linked slopes.

But if you do, expect some varied skiing, long descents and uphill travel via arguably the world’s best lift system – most of the lifts are fast gondolas or high-capacity chairlifts.

On the Slopes

Access to the local Asitz mountain above the village is via two gondolas, but absolute beginners will want to stick to the valley’s learning areas. Long runs drop back down to the village through the woods – these can be a blast first thing in the morning when freshly groomed. From the summit, three fast 8-seater chairs and a 6-pack serve short, gentle slopes but more importantly link in with the Saalbach valley.

Once in the Saalbach valley, a vast network of pistes opens up. These are mostly well-groomed blues and reds – of which the long blue 2b is a favourite.

Advanced skiers should head to the steep, ungroomed slopes above Fieberbrunn – you can get here either by skiing via Hinterglemm and the TirolS gondola or by catching a bus up the valley from Leogang – or to the steep groomed pistes beneath Schattberg.

In the Resort

Compared to the bustle and buzz of Saalbach and Hinterglemm, Leogang is a much quieter base from which to explore the Skicircus. Family-run hotels – most of which are well equipped with spa facilities – dominate the accommodation offering and most are only a stone’s throw away from the lifts.

Away from the slopes, cross country skiing and winter walking are major attractions here. Just up the valley is Hochfilzen, host each year to the Biathlon World Cup, which is home to some of Austria’s best cross country routes.

Getting to Leogang

The transfer to Leogang is one of the quickest in the Alps, with Salzburg only an hour to the north of the resort. Innsbruck is a good alternative and the drive takes just under two hours.

Austria

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.

Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.

These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.

Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.

Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
