Nakiska

The closest major resort to Calgary, Nakiska mostly attracts daytrippers and weekend skiers, but its slopes have serious ski racing pedigree.

As host resort for the ski racing programme during the 1988 Calgary Olympics, Nakiska gained worldwide notoriety and it was constructed out of nothing specifically to host the huge event.

The Downhill was won by the legendary Pirmin Zurbriggen of Switzerland and Alberto Tomba took gold in both the GS and Slalom. Parts of the track are still in use today as a high performance training centre for the Canadian team, but don’t be put off if you’re a hardcore racer – much of the terrain is pretty mellow and well-groomed, rolling pistes are the order of the day. That being said, the Monster Glades are popular after fresh snow and there are some good blacks off the summit.

Reflecting the resort’s place as a weekend or daytrip destination, there’s no accommodation on the hill and you’ll need to stay down the valley. A good plan is to perhaps stop off here for a day of skiing on the way inland to Banff.

The Coastals get hit with a mega period of cold and snowy weather through the course of this week, with this forecast period bookended by around 30cm over Tuesday and Wednesday, followed by another 20m on the weekend. Things will remain cold throughout, with the freezing line staying around or below 1,000m throughout – enough to boost upper slopes.

BC Interior will remain settled throughout this period, with temperatures floating around freezing at mid-mountain level. A brief flurry of snowfall will see in this forecast period, but barely enough to measure on the snowstake.

Over the Rockies, freezing weather over the Plains brings with it plummeting temperatures, with the freezing line hitting sea level through the middle of this week. Good snowfall will accompany this, bringing around 20cm down.

Finally, the St Lawrence has a mixed week, with temperatures floating around up to freezing and dropping to -13°C at times. A few flurries of snow will fall at times throughout the week, too.
