The slopes of Nassfeld are pretty, mostly tree-lined and served by a very good lift system that is dominated by fast 6-seater chairs and high capacity gondolas.
Most of the slopes are rated red, making this a paradise for intermediate and advanced skiers looking to cruise kilometre after kilometre of well-groomed runs. The jewel in the crown is the epic descent down to Tröpolach, which drops over 1200m of vertical to the valley floor. Unless there has been fresh powder, experts may find the ski area a bit limited, but there are a few blacks marked on the piste map. Look out for a new big connection to Pontebba over the border into Italy in the next few years.
Accommodation-wise, there are two main options. Families or those looking for maximum convenience should base themselves at Sonnenalpe, which has a decent collection of family run hotels and apartment buildings. The alternative is to stay at Tröpolach at the foot of the Millenium Express gondola – which has its own good selection of accommodation and dining options. Away from the slopes, the region is home to 300km of cross country trails, 150km of winter walking trails and if the Pressegger See in the valley freezes, great ice sports are on offer.

Ski Club Recognised: Environmentally Sustainable Resort
The Ski Club uses third party independent assessments and accreditation of ski resorts to determine a resort “environmentally sustainable” – more information can be found here.
Nassfeld has received certification from the Global Sustainability Tourism Council (GSTC) as a sustainable tourist destination, requiring the a destination to meet criteria across four areas, including sustainable management, socio-economic sustainability, cultural sustainability, and environmental sustainability.
The GSTC is a UN-affiliated body dedicated to enabling sustainable tourism around the world. GSTC certification is controlled by Vireo, an Italian for-profit certification and licencing organisation that manages several similar schemes. Nassfeld was awarded its certificate in 2021, which expires in 2024.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
