Niederau is the first village in the Wildschönau Region and is home to a fantastic beginner zone on the edge of the valley.
There is also a decent network of groomed slopes accessed via a gondola and a chairlift. Several of these are nice and steep, offering up a stern challenge to all but the most expert skiers and boarders. Snow reliability is the only issue here, but snowmaking and the northerly exposition helps. A short bus ride (included in the lift pass) takes you round to Auffach and the access gondola to the wider Ski Juwel region, shared with Alpbach and Wildschönau. This linked network of blues and reds is great for beginners to advanced intermediates, plus on a powder day there’s good off piste options.
The village itself is compact, with a number of family-run hotels located right at the foot of the beginner slopes. Many of these are ski-in-ski-out and family friendly, making this a great destination if you’re looking to bring along the little ones – the ski school also has an excellent reputation. The Schirm Bar at the foot of the slopes is a popular spot for an après drink and tobogganing from the top of the gondola back down to the valley is a popular option.

After a pretty desperate season, bumper conditions finally – finally – arrive for Austria, as it experiences its first Nortstau event of the season through the middle of this week.
Unsettled conditions drifting in from the north will bring with it cold temperatures as the freezing line takes a long walk off a short pier; from a daytime high of 2,400m on Wednesday it will plummet to sea level by Friday morning.
These unsettled conditions will of course mean snow, with good snowfall hitting the Austrian Alps on Wednesday afternoon and continuing steadily until Friday morning; this will see around 45cm fall, particularly focused across higher ground as the freezing line works its way down the elevation chart steadily over this period. Around 25cm will fall on Thursday alone.
Expect the avalanche risk to increase over this period as this new snowfall sits on either wet ground, wet snow, or a spring freeze-thaw crust; plan your backcountry routes carefully, and check your local avalanche forecast before heading out.
Sun returns with gusto on Saturday, before the last few flurries of cloud and snow move in over Sunday and the new week.
